Newsworthy: Myspace to allow for Ad-Supported downloads Artist Get Paid

Who said that my letter to MySpace a year ago wasn't well received...

MySpace to Move Into Ad-Supported Music

The Company recently announced that they will allow a handful of bands to offer Ad-Supported Downloads to their page, a practice that has been long banned on Myspace. The tides are a changing when band Pennywise with the help of Textango will offer its complete catalog of music on the Megawebsite free of charge starting very soon.

My sources tell me that apparently Myspace's recent sponsorship of Snocap has been moving at a snails pace with I-tunes crushing the Mp3 download market. Plus with the advent of We7.com, Lyrix, and Spiral Frog the company wants to keep kids on Myspace, so the choice was made as of yesterday with a press release from Myspace willing to allow the process.

So what does it all mean for the little bands on Myspace, apparently the Ad-Supported Methods will not be open to everyone, but selected bands who have a "significant fanbase with 1,000 plays a day average". The good thing is that it will significantly allow for artist to give their music to fans and get paid to do it...

Finally, a step in the right direction I think... There is already a thousand ads on the Myspace site anyway, whats one more????

On the flip side, I have to say, associating my music with ads for dick enlargement pills is just not going to leave me with anything but a queasy feeling.

Maybe some musicians will be cool with it, but I'd have a hard enough time letting people use my music for TV ads (where I'm getting paid in the thousands and the dilemna is a little stronger).

In my opinion, directly covering our music with adverts cheapens the experience of listening/obtaining music.

Yeah tell that to the kids who pirate music... Im sure they will go right along with you brother...

"No Buy my music, I am a real artist"
Please
I am a musician as well, and dont want to sell out to the man... But Ive got a four year old to feed.... So instead of seeing my music on Limewire, Id much rather do whatever it takes to make a living.... Why do artists always have the "I must suffer for my art" mentality...

Selling out means you became successful... It would be like saying become a nurse, because being a doctor is such a sell out...
TV is blanketed with ads...

How about I dont want to flip burgers, I would rather make a living off making music...

I agree, although I feel there is a fine line between selling out and being successful. To me, there are alot of artists that have been called sell-outs without really selling-out.

No one ever said there was something wrong with being successful... But you have to draw the line at some point.

I agree 100% My Chemical romance is labeled Sell outs? Why? Because they became hugely successful... thats pretty harsh....

I actually heard the other day one of My buddies say "Radiohead" are such sell outs....
People dont understand the meaning....

Me... I wrote a song called Sell out on my myspace page... you should check out... Its my clever IMO attempt at addressing the issue....

Who said anything about selling out?

I just don't like the context. It's gross.

what makes you think we are not selling disposables little pieces of $1.00 art?

create it

produce it

print it

sell it

ship it

go on to the next one. no need for whining. (in general, not directed to someone )

great times we live on. now that the big 4 label empire is falling and things are murky and no clear road, opportunity could be anywhere.
maybe ad supported download is the way to go, maybe not.
