Thread Starter | Guys, I need your wisdom…
I’m in the process of updating and reconfiguring my studio… I need to do full orchestra mockup arrangements/compositions using sampled libs. Would you guys recommend using a hardware mixer with this setup or mix entirely within the computer with a DAW? What do you think would be the best solution for this application? Config #1: Computer A: Audio Sequencer (SX, Nuendo, Logic…) w/ RME 9652 card. Computer B: Gigastudio w RME 9652 card. Connected both RME’s w lightpipe cables. Use a good A/D-D/A card for analog inputs/outputs and monitoring. Use a Mackie control w an extender to facilitate the mix. Config #2: Use a Digital console (Yamaha 02R96, Mackie DB8, DM-24….?) Computer A: Audio Sequencer w RME 9652 card. Computer B: Gigastudio w RME 9652 card. Connected both RME’s w lightpipe cables to the Mixer. Config #3: ????? What works well and sounds good? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

Gearslutz regular Bevy B was looking into all this, he needs the same as you - massive orchestral samples ALL to hand at ALL times.. He gets back from a trip from the UK to NYC & LA in a week or so.... He was planning on 2 cheap but fast PC's to run Giga sampler and a mac for his Logic / Motu rig... Its worth doing a net search on Hans Zimmer tech interviews for further info on the subject...

Thanks Jules, Can wait to pick Bevy B's brain about this... Hey '2" Tape sucks!', Do you think a full HD3 rig stuff will be enough to handle this config? Yikes! are you sure? LOL Man, my jaw fell apart and something inside me start decomposing when I saw the picture! btw, I would love to have this rig... Thanks, guys for taking the time to respond. JHanks. |

JHanks, it would be hard to do better than a gigasampler setup along with the new Vienna Orchestra lib that is coming out very soon. I heard it at the October AES show and the sound was truly impressive. Can't give you a better recommendation than that for orchestral mockups. If you want to work real fast, then get a digital mixer and soundcards for gigasampler with enough outputs (digital preferably or analog) to be able to individually address all the sampled instruments you will be using. 32-48 channels of audio would be ideal. This would probably still be cheaper than an equivalent ProTools setup, if budget is an issue. |

Guys, Sorry about the double posts. I 'm not really sure what happened, got too many windows opened may be when I hit reply?.... Hey Albert, I'm with you...I've checked the VSL a while ago, it supposed to ship at the end of this month. According to the demos it sounds very good to me. I can't wait to order the demo cube and give it a try. I wasn't considering a Protools rig with this type of application, although it would work well. I hope you understood that I was teasing '2" Tape sucks!' about his rack. So you'll go for Config #2, huh? Make sense... do you know anybody that is using this type config w/ a similar setup by any chance? I appreciate your input, thanks. JHanks |
