Thread Starter | My Control Room Wall is Up!
I have been wanting to convert my 23' x 25' garage into a studio space for a few years, but everything has lived in a big extra den we have until now. Tonight I will have the wall that forms the division between the control room and what will eventually be the studio space completed! I framed the wall today and I just hung a door. I now need to hang the sheetrock. The wall I built is in a "V" shape with the apex of the "V" poking into the control room. The room is 14.5' at the narrowest point and the outside walls are 16'. I plan to use the tapered section of the wall as space for one or two bass traps, so the room will end up being 23' x 14' of useable space. I have a lot of stuff, so that is barely enough room. Eventually I will build another room that will take up the space that still is the garage. By framing in an fully floated room in that space I will have a small room big enough to record drums in quite comfortably. Yeah, I'd rather have a big room for them. I'll be plenty big for GTR, vocal and other ODs though. That room will be about 22' x 12' which is a decent space to work in. Can't do a full band, but that takes a real space and that requires a big investment. Been there, done that.... quite a few times in fact! I'm getting jazzed here! Working in the house has S U C K E D!!!!! I have kids and they all go to bed early as does my wife. For some reason my studio is the center of the house's universe for them. |

Congrats! You should posts a pic or two. Construction is crazy and much more expensive than one would think. I swear the most expensive piece of gear in my little studio is the lumber and drywall. And it's just a 8' x 12' wall. Working in your house. Yikes!

Yeah... the house is MUCH cjeaper and convenient! I have had, let's see... four different studios that were full on, stand-alone building outfits and one I was in ten years later, so that kinda' makes five. I also used another room everyday for five years, so that is really sic because I completely gutted that place... twice really. So six rooms? I know of a studio that I used to own (number four) that is probebly closeing in the near future. the building will probebly go up for sale. It is in a 10K sq. ft.commercial building which also has a 5K sq. ft. space that is not the studio. That space has been rented to other businesses in the past and that pays the mortgage and such. Me and my good friend that I work for/with have been kicking around the idea of buying it should it become available. We already rent a 5K sq. ft. warehouse for the p.a., lighting, video company. The part I dread is the maintenance on the studio portion. Four thirty year old HVAC units on the roof. The roof itself. A studio is such a headache to run. ...and then, would it make any money to justify it's existance? No! The house is just so convenient! Plus I can deduct the space on my taxes. |

Woohoo...no more working on headphones for you late at night. Ya know the plastering, or I should say sanding the plaster, is the worst part.... Cheers. |

I am not worring about the finish of the walls because I am hanging fabric panels that will cover the entire wall. In essence they will be the equivelent of flats like they use on stages. I am toying with the idea of making them rigid which will work for better absorbtion. The existing walls were already textured, so I may keep one or two and they'll just require cleaning and paint. |
