Is it fair to ask a Mastering engineer for a sample?

Can I expect a Mastering engineer to Master one the songs from the album I have finished as a sample?
Not the whole song but perhaps give me back a sample song 3/4 of the way mastered?

At the very least for a big discount so I can get an idea of thier skills / style / etc?

It seems like such and important detail that unless I heard something first, how would I know who to choose? I can't afford to take a chance.

Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Send a message via AIM to MASSIVE Master
I do "ballpark" sample masters at no charge. The only terms are that the client send in the song, a BLANK CD-R and a SASE.

There's a "GET A SAMPLE" page on my site...

We do the same as John over here.
It seems fair for the customer and yes...it does bring in new clients.

Thank you guys! That helps alot.
I suppose would get the same song mastered partially from 3 or 4 places and choose on that. That seems like a good option.

I can't afford Bob's studios, much less Bob. Even his 1st engineer cost more per hour than I can swing right now.
