"Buss" or "Bus" / Where You Learned It

My OCD has been bugging me about this one. Can't seem to find consistent use on this anywhere. I've found magazine articles + manufacture's websites that use both spellings on the same page. Interchangeably as verbs or nouns. Can't seem to find a pattern.

Have thought that possibly "buss" may be kind of British and "bus" US. But was curious how all of you spell it.

Buss all the way - Bus is just too much like the automotive device of the same name.

"buss" etymology refers to an adaptation over time to a word meaning "to kiss"

"bus" in audio refers to an electrical term "bus bar" which is essentially a conductor carrying a common signal/path.

(I must admit, I got this info from www.webster.com a number of hours ago when MY OCD over the exact same item was getting the better of me!!! )

I've been known to use whichever my finger's decide as they type away....

A Google search shows that "Buss Bar" seems to be at least as common in the US as 'Bus Bar", as it relates to electrical power

And right when I decide to spell it "bus" for awhile, in the same paragraph I'll need to use the plural form "busses" which makes the singular look like I spelled it wrong (in light of the other spelling "buss") and that pretty much screws me up. ("Buses" is an optional plural spelling, but looks like "boo-ses". Can't have that.)

So, then I'll go with "buss" and promptly run into some golden eared all-knowing-engineer-god who spells it "bus". Oh shit!

To have been blessed with the freedom of those non-OCD-ers out there. (...but then I wouldn't have been an engineer.)

Bus, seems very much like the US slant, I've only ever known it as Buss.
Thing is I can't actually find any evidence of this in the dictionary I have here.

Buss, Busses...Bussed

???

An advanced search on Google to find results with all of the words: buss, console yields 10,600 listings.

The same search for: bus, console yields 507,000 listings.

IIRC, Alton Everest was absolutely adamant about it being "bus". Does that matter? I think that's why I've always used "bus".

Somebody, somewhere, at some specific point in time, coined this term in relation to electrical circuits. He knew, for sure. I'm thinking it's time to find out who that was and how he spelled it.

my searches at google.be count :

10.800 for buss console

526.000 for bus console

that means there's a more rapid increasing number of people using bus and not buss.

Another factor might be that it includes the Belgian sites too (google.be) but I doubt there's 13.000 sites in belgium that use both bus and console so ... bus it has to be imho.

I'll most likely continuee to use 'buss' for two - no, three - reasons. First, the plural, 'busses' looks right to me, while 'buses' doesn't. Second, the electricans who taught me about them use 'buss'. And third, if everyboady else is moving to a single 's', both my contrarian instincts and a love for obsolete words would make me want to continue using the word 'buss'.

But then, I'll also ask people to leave messages on my 'codaphone' and drive a 'horseless carraige'...

Although I am very into etymology and language construction, after reading this thread for a bit, I feel that we should use buss. The main (sole?) reason is that bus already means something else in English.
Just to let all you sickos know that you're not alone, I too have pondered this issue many times in the past.

10,900 for mackie bus console.

10,900 wrongs doesn't make it right.

Does it?

And this is exactly what I was talking about!!!! Quoted directly off of a re-sellers site. Look @ this:
  • 8 Buss Recording/Reinforcement Consoles

This is the console that broke the price barrier of studio quality recording consoles.

    M24-8 - - - 24 channel, 8 bus Recording Console. - - - 2899.00

    M32-8 - - - 32 channel, 8 bus Recording Console. - - - 3599.00
That is absolutely unbelievable. Obviously they didn't know how to spell it so they just used both!

That solves it right there.

Here's the etymology:

http://www.quinion.com/words/articles/omnibus.htm

Latin omnis -> plural omnibus -> omnibus bar -> bus bar -> bus. One "s."

re OCD (just to go waaayyy OT for a sec) is it just me, or does anybody else have the compulsion to reorganize the silverware after your partner puts away the dishes?

I think this same drive benefits me when working. (...trying to bring it On T) While mixing I search for order, trying to organize + present things in a way that others can comprehend more clearly.

OCD, what a blessing.

Even if it is "bus," "busses" would still be plural.

"Based" on this discussion then, maybe the instrument should be changed to BAS and BASS should be left for the fishes...

Where did I learn it? As I recall it was from the manual of one of the first consoles I ever used. A Soundcraft.
