Is this a new Neve product?
I only found it mentioned once in a Google search. The website wasn't in English, so I don't know what was written about it.
If it's a new product, I bet it will probably list for at least $3,500-$4,000. That seems to be a typical range for a 4 channel preamp like that. It looks like it's 4x's the pre from a 1081.

I don't get it. Thats like the same price as a 1073dpa, except you get 4 channels instead of 2. Is the 1081 half as good or something?

Temas i rly dont think so.
Ive got both 1081 stereo channel from neve and a 1073dpa as well.
The two are rly different sound.
I just think its the 'cheaper' more affordable one...Like at SSL the alpha and the E signature channels.
I do have to listen to it one of the dealers will show it to me soon
Cant wait to hear that hot little baby

I still find the price drop really bizarre; its a good thing, but its a bit wierd. The 12 channel 1081r is six times as expensive as this.

Neve 1081R/Air 12 channel rack | VintageKing.com

Why would anyone buy that if you can get 3 x 4081 for half the price?

I hope they bring out a 4 channel eq unit to match.

Are these and the 1081R the exactly same preamp as in the AMS-Neve 1081 units with EQ?

I think AMS are trying to appeal to Pro Tools Users with that price point. you can control the 4081 from Pro Tools so the price has to be in the price range of competing "Pro Tools Controllable" Mic Pre's.... Granted it is half the amount of channels as a grace or millennia but it has the right right price and the name on the front panel (Neve...)...

Reading the description above, I would say no... It looks like the line input transformer has been omitted. Not sure the other differences.

it is the exact same preamp as the 1081r. I can't explain why the low price point though...

The only thing I can think is it is because the power supply and rack are much different and there isn't any front panel connections

This could be the same thing what just ssl did?
They've got the alpha channel with vhd preamp and eq's and they've got the E signature channel...
The signature ch is nearly 4 times the alpha but i dont think i have to tell the differences!

I would guess it's this cheap because of the lack of EQ, wich is a pity.
But a quick calc gives me 10k€ for a 16ch Neve preamp setup...I like!!

OK AMS-Neve, you've got my attention... and normally I really dislike calling pieces of metal "sexy", but in this case, now that we've been teased with the front side, I can't wait until we get a glimpse of the back side... and I'm a bit unnerved at how that sounds with respect to you know, checking out - oh never mind.

As far as price, there must be some of you who of course realize that equipment manufacturers have to like - make money to stay in business. AMS-Neve now lives at a low volume / high end market space. They want to move into a more mainstream spot with the product, so it is priced accordingly. Its not like they are trying to compete with Presonus or anything, but with the momentum generated by the Genysys it only makes sense that they will introduce a handful of new products to try to take advantage of that momentum to break into new markets.

I only hope that this is a real release and not going to be available next year, like so many other paper releases that have been sort of irritating in a mild way.

I partially modify my earlier statement about this being an effort on AMS-Neve's part to get into new markets... I think it primary function will be as an extension to the Genesys with full integrated remote control to improve the flexibility of the environment, but with the additional benefits for those looking for a standalone / portable box and even more exciting, the proposed firewire card to make it a handy high quality interface.

An interesting element no one has mentioned ... the digital option includes both Firewire and a four-channel DAC -- yes, a DAC in addition to the ADC. That means this thing is just an attenuator and a headphone amp away from being a complete DAW interface.

yep - I've been waiting for more details about the ADA side of the 4081. I think it needs some low-latency software for it to be useful as a complete DAW interface (especially as a FW device). Wonder if it comes with such a feature with its digital control software?

I'm trying out a Prism Orpheus next week but I really only need 4 ins outs so the 4081 might be the ticket (especially with 4x1081's on board!!). I like the insert feature too.

EDIT: just spoke to the very helpful people at AMS-Neve. No specific software catering for zero latency like the Orpheus but they don't rely on the Apple driver so
hopefully for latency it will be set and forget in Logic - with no random offsets, etc.

this product really does offer amazing value - and yes everything is still UK built, same 1081 front-end, no short-cuts. Digital option still 'Q2 2008' schedule.

If this thing comes with AD/DA its such a no brainer for me.... i will be all over it!

AMS has EXCELLENT digital experience and I really like the AD of the DPD so ingers crossed they can keep up with previous expectations and exceed them with this new product and what it offers.

Thanks
Wiggy
