Talking

Hmmmm finally ive got my own 4081.

My first impressions:

first when i've got it unpacked and immediately opened it up to compare with my 1081.
Im not a real tech dude -so im not sure at all- but as far as I see its more or less like my good old friend 1081.My only bad feeling was the red knobs are a little plastic for me....but I havent tried via Rs or USB!

Than i plugged it up to hear whats up.
Its a great REAL neve sounding unit for me more intense in the mid section.I let it thru it some mixes as well and compared with my aws900 and that was amazing.its more understandable sound and more detailed.

I will post some samples next week 1081 vs 4081

I think this IS a really great unit.

4081 impressions...

RoB,
Hey, were you able to get those photos over the weekend? Also, what are your impressions of the 4081, sonically speaking. I am curious and getting ready to invest a bit more in my studio. Thanks - Ben

For me the inside capacitors are identical to the ones in 1081.the big thing IMHO in the unit -perhaps u cant see it so clearly- are those 4 huge green transformers are the same as well

Neve 4081 vs Universal audio 8110 vs tascam 4800

How does the neve 4081 pre-amp stand vs Universal audio 8110?
What about the pre-amp of the DM 4800 Tascam digital desk?

Thanks for your help

WOW, what a disappointment! It's missing a LOT of transformers.... Also, looks like it's LOADED with IC's.

I got to feel one up at a dealer last week, so only from a physical sense it it felt cheap, the red plastic knobs wobbled in their place.

but thats counts for nothing on how they sound.

OTOH my Vintech's X73 metal knobs are solid and feel like they will last forever. and again, nothing to do with sound.

Hell yeah the 1073/1081's have plastic knobs but who cares?
But it feels more plastic on the 4081 but....for that price....dont give a ****
Ive tried the 1073dpd and if they are going to put that adda into the 4081 huhh
Neve is neve I dont wanna watching or feel anything on the unit.
BTW both on my 2 dual 1081 psu the module doesnt fit into the rack.Do I care?
Not at all because it has a character.

4081

Finally got mine in today. I have not yet had enough time with it to make any real assessments. I will say this however, I was a bit concerned in the lack of detail in packaging, no paperwork, warranty card, etc. The unit looks kind of spotty or soiled on the top/side panel, it may have just become this way since it was not wrapped in any plastic. Not that these things affect the sound, but I would expect a product in this price range to be packaged accordingly, I will call the dealer tomorrow to confirm that this product was new.

The build quality feels solid, yes it has plastic knobs but this is not an issue for me whatsoever, plastic components are sometimes best for specific purposes. Overall, I am quite pleased about the physical quality and finish.

I will post further once I spend more time with it.

I'd be really interested in comments as to how the 4081 sounds compared to a 1081, original or reissue. As it can be seen in the pictures posted above and as it was confirmed to me by AMS-Neve, the unit doesn't feature the output transformer of the original (nor does the 1081R); they said it's been replaced by a modern, high performance solid state design and they've tried to match it to the original as closely as possible.

Anyone tried them side by side?

...in addition, what's the status of the advertised digital card? Is it shipping or still in development?
