"Advise" is a verb; "Advice" is a noun.

I don't really like to be pedantic but I've seen this mistake so many times now on these forums that I thought I'd make this little public service announcement.

Thanks for listening.

And "which/that" if I may add one as one of the criminals himself.

BTW, as we are at language again. One question, please. Last time someone here mentioned that "anyways" was just a wrong / colloquial version of "anyway". That case got me thinking, because when I was at NYU for a while the teacher told us that the sense of these words was differing. She said something like "anyways" would be sort of in the meaning of "who cares", consequently rather unfriendly compared to "anyway."

Huh?

Could someone give an example of a common "advise" mistake? I can't really think of something.

Think of it like this.

"Anyway" would be a way for the write/speaker to say they are either rambling or have said enough and would like to move on to another subject, weather that be more writing/speaking from them or letting another person begin writing/speaking.

"Anways" would be something a valley girl would say when you told her that she couldn't use your credit card to go shopping.

I'm no english major but hopefully that cleared things up for ya.

while were on it, the most egregious(imo) and also the most frequent grammatical error on this and many other bbs is "your" and "you're"

your- belonging to you
you're- you are

and i know i left out the apostrophe in we're. im a lazy typer. i also left out the apostrophe in i'm. same reason.

edit: i suppose that there is another common error, similar to the one above. the confusion between possessive and plural. example: mics= more than one mic. mic's= something belonging to an imaginary being named mic.

sorry. those two really seem to be everywhere.

Thanks, Randy! I´ll try to remember the rule.

So, only girls would say "anyways" who hadn´t seen my skinny wallet before, right?

well that's a bit of a tricky one. had your example been "tree," then "trees" is definitely the plural.

but abbreviations and acronyms, e.g., don't necessarily follow the same rules.

e.g. when i want to express the plural of a mic pre, i'll often write: "pre's", mostly because "pres" looks a little odd.

if you look at mic as an abbreviation, it could be that the apostrophe in "mic's" is really a stand-in for "rophone", much as the apostrophe in "can't" is a stand-in for "no".

on a slightly related note. Could someone please layout the meanings of all/some of the acronyms. I've gotten some of them over time or at least i think i have... for example

imho= in my humble opinion?
(although their are some deviations upon this that i still haven't figured out, but at least i get the jist of it now.)

The other one i see alot that i have absolutely no clue what it stands for is ymmv? What the hell does that mean?!

you invented afaik? that's a coincidence because I invented the English language, i think I first used it in an email back in '79. anyways... what's it mean?

On a slightly different tangent. How is it we're taking English language lessons from America? I realize how galling incorrect word usage/spelling must be for you Berolzheimer but: 1) there are people outside the USA who frequent and post on this site, and guess what, for some of them, Engrish is a 2nd or 3rd language. 2) we've done this thread already... it didn't help then and this one won't help either.

Thanks for the advise

Affect is a verb

Effect is a noun

"This mic placement will create a unique effect."

afaik= as far as I know.

Origins lie in the French language circa 1560. Apparently some "concrete slut" got a little tired of always saying complete sentences and started making up acronyms for common sayings. This caused everyone around him to think he "flew the coop" and got him locked into a mental institution for the rest of his like where he repeated afaik over and over....

Wow! You had e-mail correspondence 1984?
I thought that was commonly telex at that time.

Oddly, the greatest acronym of them all rarely shows up here.

RTFM

But i digress (or anyways).

I really like when drummers count their symbals and use them to define their kit. "I had a 13 piece kit back when i was 20 had 9 symbols with it and 2 toms i sold it on ebay." I'm not going to try to work cymbol in to this. But a lady at the mexican restaurant was playing finger-cymbils. Would have been really cool with an affects processor, but the guy said he'd rather be known as a repo man.

So how does this Advise® verb sound? Is it comparable to a yardstick or a pcm91? I'm in the market for a new affect and am curious if it will be better then my quadraverb.

GT. IAWWSOTAW.

OOOPS! I'll try again.

Great topic. I always wondered what so of these acronyms were.

RTFM is a good one...I didn't see it until I saw it on the DUC....and for good cause too.

I agree, the your/you're one bothers me alot. Also the no/know and to/too is far too popular.

although i dont really agree with you on that point (fact being that its bad grammar), i can see where youre coming from. however, the misuse of " 's " that i often see is used to indicate plurality in words that havent been abbreviated.

But.........just to speak for the non-Brittish/American/Australien/south African people (b.t.w their Dutch is so funny, don't get me started), the majority does its very best to write in a correct manner.
Some people are a little too "well, heya, l tweaked this mofo 'round 'till the RMHFL wheels fell off, lol, but it still sounds Vanilla as hell" for my taste, but most of us try to to write decent English.
Of course mistakes do pop up once in a while but to be frank, I think you should all be thankful for our adequate level of English.
But it's good to give tips, it shows respect for your language, something that is completely lost in The Netherlands.

Indeed my little autograph doesn't make my point waterproof. That English is a little to cool for me.
It's from "On The Road" by Jack Kerouac. ... So for any foreigner who wants to learn hip-jazz hobo language, read that book! It's kicks man, everybody's kicks!
