Mic/ Pre for acoustic guitar

I'm looking for a good combo mic pre and mic for recording steel string acoustic guitar. There will be no flat picks or crunky percussive playing. Mostly alternate tuning finger style. I'm thinking of buying a Peluso 2247 SE that could double as a main vocal mic but also do a good job with the acoustic guitar. Thanks

I sometimes use a peluso 22 251 and a-designs pacifica on acoustic, but mostly use neumann km184 stereo pair. I think you would have to try a 22 247 and 22 251 to see what works for you as far as vocals go but I dont know how the 247 sounds on acoustic.

for that type of acoustic guitaring, I typically like sdc mics. KM84 plus flamingo is the best combo I have ever found.

Neumann KM 84 + Chandler LTD-1 is my main choice for steel-string acoustic guitars, both strummed and picked.

Check this topic if you want to hear peluso mics on an acoustic guitar: PELUSO sound clips from shootout

My personal favorite should be a combo of the peluso P12 through a clean preamp and a royer 121 trough a LA-610. blend in to taste and enjoy!

How 'bout a Pacifica and stereo AT 4051's or SM81's.
That Peluso would be great too, and you'd be able to do the vocal thing.
I thought Peluso is coming out with a U67 emulation microphone. That might be good to wait for and in the interim pick up a decent pair of SDC's.
The SDC's will pick up the transients better and make things a little sharper.

To further Cloud any decision making, Hardy M-1 and Oktava MK-012, or Shure KSM-141. Stereo or mono.

Do you want a preamp made for acoustic, or a preamp that will just sound good for generic use? If you want a dedicated acoustic preamp...

I have a Pendulum SPS-1 stereo acoustic preamp that sounds excellent for both live and studio. I use if for pretty much all my acoustic stringed-instrument recording. I use an assortment of mics depending on which instrument, what sound I want, and the style of playing.
  1. Pair of Senn. ME40s
  2. AKG 451 CK1 with an EV RE-20
  3. AKG 451 CK1 with an sE 3500
  4. Countryman Isomax II*
  5. sE5600 on various settings up to omni depending on the room
  6. AKG 414 if I have access to one.
  7. Wish I had a C12
*Note on the Countryman:
One of my favourite mics. All my acoustic instruments have a rare earth magnet hot-glued under the soundboard, and I have the Countryman on a little gooseneck with an opposite-polarity magnet on it. It just pops onto the face of all my instruments. This is what I use live, and the Countryman is the mic I get the most (positive) comments on from players and sound engineers. Often get asked how I get such a full, natural, open sound on my guitar.

I have a Sunrise magnetic pickup in one of my dreadnoughts that I will sometimes blend in for some extra bite. Good for flatpicking and rock strumming.

Pacifica or Hardy pres on acoustic sources = uh huh.

I swear those Oktava MK-012 mics deliver the right mix of woody thwackiness and pick scrape attack and full midrange on acoustic guitars that is just...beautiful. Just made for each other. The MK-012 can also be a very decent vocal mic. Don't knock it because it's an SDC...

Most people should be able to take maybe half of the mic locker out of the equation, just by listening to the guitar/player/vocalist before even putting anything up.

Ive been experimenting with recording my Martin lately. Ive used a Pearlman TM-2 in front and a Neumann KM140 over the shoulder, which was really nice. Km140's in XY,ORTF. AKG 414b ULS and KM140 in M/S with a Grace Design Lunatec V3>Rosetta 200. 414's 12th fret and the other more on the body. 414's in XY. Its come to a matter of taste. Im really digging the 414's in XY. I run them into a Pacifica>Rosetta 200. I did like the clean sound of the Grace as well but the Pacifca beat it out.

A particularly good finger-pick sound I once got was a Neuman m149 into what was probably an Avalon 737 (Possibly a Vintech X81). We were all delighted with the sound. Once the song got going it turned out the player's part was strumming :P

A c451 is a pretty safe bet on acoustics. If I had access to them the first two preamps I would try would be a John Hard M-1 and API.
