For me it really depends on the style of music and the setting (i.e. studio or concert hall), but my ultimate is a pair of Neumann TLM-50's (the transformerless version of the old M50). For something more financially reasonable, I'd go with a pair of DPA 4003's in a some sort of A/B configuration (omni, might not work for pop, rock, etc. or loud on-stage situations where bleed is major concern) or a pair of Schoeps CMC6mk4's. Both have made me quite happy on a number of occasions.

the close mics usually always depend on the piano/player... but for the room, i usually ALWAYS go with royers in blumlein.

All good guys, keep it on until i start to see a pattern in the answers ... To be more precise, it would be for studio recording and pop/rock style... |

Coles is great - especially for solo piano. But I recently switched from using them. See here.... Ribbon Madness....Some Comparisons As of late I prefer the Joly modded 205's for most things unless it's very softly played - at which point the Coles are awesome. No matter the style, if all I had were 4038's though I'd be quite happy. For more agressive, in a rock or country track type of style, I'd probably opt for some 67's. |
