| No. I use my 121 for rock recordings with no problem. Even with quieter acoustic stuff it's fine. |

If you already have a decent/good preamp with a lot of gain I would say that the r121 will cover all your needs without any problems. Go for it and save some $ | |

| agree with above... and, when we bought a 121 (that we use all the time), we tried the 122 as well, and actually preferred the sound of the 121 -- a small differences but noticeable to us, especially on most acoustic instruments (it sounds great on elec gtrs, drums, etc., too)... the 121 sounded a little more realistic to our ears... |

| Here's how I think of it: AFAIK, they use the exact same design except the phantom-powered amplifier in the 122. Thus using a 121 will give you more of the character of your preamp (it has to provide more gain) while the 122 will give you less preamp character and more the sound of the mic itself. I've not used the 122 too much, but I've always liked expirimenting with the dramatic differences that various preamps will give ribbons. It's like another fun variable in the sound. P.S. Pair a ribbon with a variable-impedence preamp (TG2 with option, Great River NV, ViPRE, Mackie Onyx 800R) and you can have all sorts of fun. Sometimes the impedence mismatch can completely change that "huge proximity effect" you can get with ribbons, and give you a radically different EQ while retaining the distinct ribbon character. |
