What would you do with alot of money?

I'm always interested in what people are more interested doing. If you had $15,000 and you wanted to work in the recording industry what would you rather do? Go to a recording school and try to get a job at another studio. Or buy recording gear and try to get artist to record with you?

Spend or invest or pay notes due. It's the only thing you can do with bank notes. They're liquid. They move.

Get a job at a studio. Arrange for them to let you use the facilities during downtime.
Invest some money in a bunch of decent mics, a cheap headphone amp and some phones. Put together a small mobile recording rig.
Invest some of the money to educate yourself about basics like acoustics, electronics, etc...(books, community college)
Do location (i.e. rehearsal room) recording gigs with your mobile equipment and mix them at your workplace when you can.

I don't have enough information to help you, but here goes:

I'm guessing that the $15k is all you've got to work with? Not that $15k isn't a nice amount of money, but not quite enough to start a recording studio that will compete with the other studios out there who are still having a tough time paying their rent, much less turn a profit.

If I were you, I'd pay off any debt I owed first. Let's say you have no debt, then with the $15k, I would personally invest it in a downpayment on a home. If you're already a homeowner, re-finance your variable rate and get a fixed rate. If you've already got a fixed rate at 6% or so, then, I'd invest the money for your retirement. I know that sounds boring, but you're going to need it.

Now, for the sake of indulging you in your recording aspirations, and assuming you wish to disregard my above suggestion, I'd tell you to get a real good mic, a real good pre, a real good compressor, a really good converter, a ProTools 003 rig and a set of really good monitors. Much of your $15k budget is now gone.

Good luck!

Nowadays 15k doesnt really sound like a lot of money. You can make that in a year working at MacD's Definitely enough for a decent demo setup but not what many would consider an actual studio.

If I had an additional $15K, or was starting out with $15K. If it was in additional to...

BLA Tweak Head mod for my 002R, another AKG C414-BXLS, Sennheiser e602, Lawson L47Fet, Neumann U87, (2) Neumann KM-184, Emperical Labs, Distressor, Great River MP-2NV, API 3124+, DBX 160X, Universal Audio 2-LA-2, and Adam P11-A pair.

If I bought used, I could probably obtain those things for $15K.

Isn't that the best line in Office Space? Sorry, couldn't resist.

A certain amount of money has nothing to do with anything. If you want to be somebody, get to work. And expect to work at it forever.

Yeah, those must be some Hi Fidelity cables.

Can't say I'd buy cables is if I had $15k.

I might get some gear though.., and get the job at another studio. Make sure it's a good one though.

Well, Id flip that $15k into some seriously rediculous money, by really investing and grinding with it nonstop full time for about 6 months. Then I would still keep turning over a certain percentage of what I then had still making more money and maybe invest about $50k of what I had into an actual home studio. Of course if I didnt have a house to build it in (was in an apartment etc.) I would use a percentage to get into a house first. So
Im in a house making money on the side and building my dream studio. It would really depent on why I wanted a studio.. Mixing? Mastering?, or if it was for actually recording other artists bands etc. I would probably do a comnmercial spot unless I had a really nice sized house that had something extra to offer like a quiet serene exterior for the artists etc. Like some of these farm type studios have, (you know an away type atmosphere). So since I know what Im building the studio for I then would go one of the routes up top and presto! successful and happy with a beautiful studio. just my thoughts anyways other people would use the 15k for some equipment and be done with it which might work for you too , everyones different
