Hey man, check out nhthifi.com. Their M-20 units or M-00 w/sub would be smokin' for you. I may go with their M-20 pair next Jan/Feb. Cool thing about the M-20 - the amps show temperature and SPL readout - AND - you're allowed to change to 5 near, mid, far fields too. The pair is 1,000. I'm going with one of those two routes within 3-4 months.

This is the most subjective question that can ever be asked. Still, where there is smoke there is fire so maybe it will help you figure out what most like and what most don't. Truly the one piece in the studio you will rely on more than anything else to make your decisions, if possible spend time with them in your place and be sure you dig them for your uses.

Having said that, the ADAM A7 is the most depth (like front to back) delivered in the $1000 range. The ADAM stuff including this inexpensive speaker, has a unique way of letting you hear the placement of things from front to back in the mix, not just left to right (any speaker pair can do that). If your vocal is .3dB hot and in front of the snare drum in the mix, the ADAM will smack you upside the head and scream it out at you.

They're good like that.

I'm a fan of the Yamaha HS80M in the $700 range if you must stick well under $1k. Quite a lot of monitor for low dough.

Again, get those ears working on a pair in your room to see what's what, whatever you decide.

Blue Sky

Blue Sky Pro Desk -- revealing, non-fatiguing, mixes translate well.

If you need to spend less, the Media Desks may do for you.

Incidentally, Blue Sky service is fabulous. Had an issue after a year. They solved it rapidly and I haven't had any problems since (two years later).

If you want the truth about what's happening in your mix, I recommend the ADAM A7. Check out the Dynaudio BM5a also.

I strongly suggest that you try them in "your" mix environment before any final decision is made.

not tried the Dynaudio, but I would highly recommend the A7's. Had mine about 2 months now and am over the moon with the sound. As previously stated tho, make sure you try monitors in your mix environment!

Simply put.. no. Great demo's are made by great people.
But you'll be running back and forth with your mix from your daw to your car, mom's stereo, granny's boombox and what not, because your crappy monitors aren't translating well.
A good nearfield monitor will tell you what's wrong with a mix sonicaly and this will translate in your demo still sounding good (or at least as good as you intended it to be) on mp3's, your dad's car stereo and possibly the record company guy's Ipod or hifi set.

Some of the most rewarding investments in my own place were good nearfields and some acoustic treatment.

A used pair of Dynaudio BM6A's. Add a sub when you get some more cash. Best low to mid priced monitor out there IMHO.

You can find b-stock Event ASP8's for under $1000 from companies like
American musical supply, Music 123, Musician's friend, & etc sometimes.
That's what I would recommend, nice speakers and better low end than
pretty much anything else at that price.

I found a place that sold me my ASP8's for $499 each.
I love these monitors. I think there very accurate and my mixes always seem to translate well. They get real loud, but also sound great at low volumes as well. The low end is clear and detailed.
