Must have "MICS" under $500? Favorite "Sleeper" Mics? "Out of the Norm"

Please add to this list. I plan on building a small arsenal of mics and I'm looking for:
"out of the norm" mics
"sleeper" mics... and
"must have" mics.

AKG D-12
Beyer M500
EV RE-20
GT 44
Senn 421, 441
Shure SM57, 58, SM7

Have fun!

CAD KBM kick drum mic (e602 sound for $50!)
MXL 603s (small condensers perfect for hat, cymbals, etc)
Studio Projects B3 (nuff said, trust me or don't)
Rode NT1-A (silky, trebly definition when its needed)
AKG 430 (great for hats and rides, but not on overheads)
I second the 421, 57/58 and D112 models

oops

I forgot to mention Shure BG 4.1- they can use a battery for phantom, cheap as heck and sound good on cymbals, etc.

for out of the norm, how about the copperphone mic? its certainly at the top of MY "out of the norm list", which unfortunately at the moment is superceded by my "client wants me to get" list and my food clothing and shelter budget

for must haves, I am sure you will get a huge list of excellent choices. Make sure a pair of PZMs is on there somewhere.

for sleeper, I nominate the beyer M260 ribbon, Beyer's "other" ribbon mic. so-so on vox and overheads but outstanding on guitar cab.

Since when is the 441 considered under $500? It lists for $900 new.

I noticed on E-bay they sell used for $200.00-$350.00
Not sure how much they go for new. I own a music store.
To me List price is just a made up price. I think a Shure
SM57 lists at $200.00-300-00 in some of our wholesale catalogs we buy from and cost $79.95

How 'bout a great mic for under $50????

Check out the MCA SP-1 from Marshall.

$39.99 from Musician's friend.

10% off if you're a n ascap or bmi member plus free shipping = $37 to your door.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned the RE-20. You can make a whole record with one of those things.

That was mentioned in the first post.

I'm embarrassed to say one of my mics I rely on most heavily in that category is the Oktava MK-012. I use them for my live remote rig. 2 on over heads and 2 on my mic cabs.

I bought my two AT4050s for - well one for $409 and the other for $500. I rely on those quite a bit.

For omnis, the Stapes/Avenson mics are a steal at $500 new.

Yesterday I shot them out against some Earthworks recording a single snare hit about a foot away in a Jecklin array using the Phoenix DRS-2 preamp. Winner... Stapes.

Another vote for the e609 silver. I just got a Royer 121 a few weeks ago but I still think that I like the e609 better on a lot of amps. It is also very nice on snare or toms. Personally like them way better than sm57s.

I'm also a fan of Studio Projects.

And since one Josephson C42 is under $500 I have to add this to my list. I've never been so amazed by how one mic can so dramatically prove my drum sound.

Oh yeah, I'm supposed to make a list:

e609 silver
Studio Projects
Josephson C42
Miller High Life (though I typically spend a little more and upgrade to Coors Light)

Nothing embarrasing about the Oktavas. They have been a great deal for us all for years now. They often are the perfect thing, regardless of price.

Placid Audio Copperphone (i have three).

Oktava ML52-02 (great ribbon for so cheap. if these had been made 50 years ago, we would be freaking out on them right now. they rock).

Grundig GBM125 ribbon (same deal, unidirectional, pretty rare. looks like a small greay 421 sort of, but with a cooler grill)

RFT/Gefell PM750 (looks like a german hand grenade, sound really weird and cool)

The "egg-static" harmonica mic. another kick ass lofi microphone. 1/4" out, but whatever it sounds like perfect hell anyway. use the U5 as a pre with it. great. Costs 20 dollars new.

Stapes/avenson. Awesome. Great, and made by cool people. I have other omni's that cost WAY more than the old style stapes I have. I use the stapes a lot.

Shure SM81. Still a cool mic for cheap. Good for lots of things.

I bought 2 for stereo drum room use. For me, it's a poor man's Royer 121. It can't take the SPL's of the Royer but at half the price, I'll use it on "quieter" guitar cabinet duties and it makes me just as happy.

Got it pretty cheap. Small diaphragm condensor uses a 9volt battery. On vocals it has a sound that is special.

Easy there punchy!

I did an AB comparison and while I found High Life to have a smooth and mellow flavor, it lacked definition and when mixed with other beers tended to disappear in the background. Coors Light on the other hand remained clear and present even when mixed with darker beers. I also noted that High Life tended to be a little bit fizzy on certain sources (e.g. curbs).

Tonight I'll do a shootout between Miller Light and Coors Light.
