Cool Bob Katz on Summing

Is our man Bob Katz out there?! Bob, I read a post from you on sending a mix to some API 550a EQs vs. summing. Thing is, if you have to put more EQ or gate/exp on individual tracks, an external summer could make sense before the final stereo pair. I'm checking out hardware inserts in Logic. For workflow, external summers seem cool. Any GS group consensus? Maybe both would offer unique flavors a la Iron Chef. This Sam Adams Octoberfest is good, I need a pizza...
