Vocal mic advice

I'm looking for vocal mic options under 700$. I don't have many mics so it should be versatile both male and female. should I go dynamic, ribbon, ldc?
I'm on a budget and can't afford big and pricey mic locker. looking for for solid and reliable mic which gives me the most for my money.
I can consider stretching my budget up to 1000$ if there is something really worth it.
I'm using FF 800, portico 5012, cubase 3sx on pc.
any opinion will be greatfully accepted.

Cheers, Tom.

SM7 - $329
AT4050 - $389

You will be more than satisfied with those two.

where do you get the AT4050 for that price??? (I have a 4047, love it on my voice, and extraordinary on electric guitar)

I myself would go for the AT8675309 "Jenny" edition

If you want versatility and ease of use and more than one sound to choose from, I would grab a RED Type B with R6 or R7 capsule for about $1100 and get the R8 capsule for free (promo until end of 2007). The R6 would give you a natural low end without big proximity boost, a slightly scooped midrange with a rich upper mid response and beautiful open top. The R7 would give you a big and ballsy low / low-mid response and a forward midrange sound, with a rolloff up top. The R8 is a pretty much natural sound across the board with a slightl top end boost for clarity.

Killer combo depending on which way you wanted to go with the R6 or R7 sound.

Telling us what mics you own and where you're trying to go sonically would help maybe get better advice though.

I haven't tried either, but from my experience with my delux e47c and jack's sense of sound I'd say that 's a healthy approach. The sm7 is a very often used mic. I think The Killers used it.

Heh, obviously if they did so should you.

Seriously, the re20 would be awesome too. Sigma's on the level. The radio announcer's mic of choice.

If I had to start over with the same budget again, I'd go for the Red series A microphones with the R7. Then can get the B series & R8 for free.
This will give you a nice tube & solid state mic with some nice versatility for the future.

For multi-purpose use, a really good mic in that general price range is Shure KSM9.

This mic is very versatile and sounds great on male and female singers, acoustic strings, percussion, whatever. For studio or live sound. Dual diaphragm 3/4" capsule. Can be handheld or stand mounted. Used straight with no pop filter, or with fitted foam if needed for wind noise or breath pops. Has switchable patterns - cardioid for a wider 'airy' tone with easy to use proximity effect, and supercardioid for a stronger, more focused sound with tighter monitor feedback/room reflection control. Black or silver color. Light weight, easy to place. Shure ruggedness and reliability.

Among many others, I have owned the U195, SM7b, RE20, AT4050, AT4033 mentioned here. Although some are indeed useful, none of those particular choices beat the KSM9 for my needs as an all-purpose mic, and I sold them. A pair can be found for <$1k with some shopping.
