Good sounding records

maybe this has been discussed here before, but i was just wondering what kind of equipment (desk, tapemachine, etc..) to create such recordings as Michael jackson´s "off the wall" or other Quincy Jones late seventies productions.. does anyone have any information? Thanks, didier
