Symphony External Hardware I/O vs. Protools HD External Hardware I/O Performance

I've tried to ask this several different ways, but can't ever seem to get an answer.

When using Logic Pro/Apogee Symphony system and you are incorporating outboard hardware compressors/EQ's and the like via an Insert, is there any difference in the performance than there is with Protools HD.

With Protools HD, I can insert a hardware compressor with no latency and can track through it.

As I understand, you can only insert external hardware with Logic when mixing and not tracking with Logic's ADC. I can live with that as long as there are no other issues. Are there?

Is doing this with a Logic/Symphony Rig as good, if not better than a Protools HD Rig?

Hey, I can't speak for Protools as I'm no expert there, but I can tell you there are major issues with using outboard hardware in Logic, even when using symphony. Symphony may have very low latency, but there's always still latency involved when doing conversion out and then back in. And logic's latency compensation, when it comes to outboard inserts, is obnoxious.

You can get a plugin called "latency fixer" that allows you to adjust the latency on tracks with outboard patched in. That's the method I use right now, and while it kind of kills your workflow, it... sort of works.

Forgive me if I misunderstood your question. And if you need more, there are plenty of threads here surrounding logic's mishandling of outboard when mixing. Especially one specifically complaining that Logic 8 didn't resolve the problem .. it's in the Logic 8 special forum.

Good luck.

I am interested in knowing this question also. On a syphony system, can you hook up an external box and track through it with no latency like in PT?
