SM57 Mexican VS. American made?

I saw a post around here where someone said the current production of SM57s are made in Mexico and don't sound as good as their American predecessors.

Has anyone else found this to be true?

and also... what's with the "LC" they're putting on boxes now? Is the SM57 in anyway different from the SM57-LC? what does LC even stand for?!

If you search for SM57 and Jim Williams as poster you'll get Jim's take on this.

He should know.

Also consider Audix i5 as an alternative. Or do the TAB Funkenwerk transformer mod to a stock 57 - see Mercenary for info. Or just get a stock SM57. Still very useable.

Good luck.

They haven't been made in the US for a very long time. If you haven't noticed it probably isn't worth worrying about. The load your pre puts on it is a much more import item IMO

LC stands for "Less Cable". There was an earlier version of the 57 that shipped with a cable included, afterwards, they stopped including it so they started to put LC on the boxes.

Well I personally do, because to my ears there's a noticeable difference between my SM57 Unidyne III (made in USA), and my Mexican made SM57. The midrange and high end is totally different between the two. The old one sounds way smoother and richer. It's not the peaky, zingy thing that many of us think of when we think of SM57.

Try dunking the new one in beer - and spit on it a few times - it might help .
