To me personally, everything after Master of Puppets sucks. Metallica died with Cliff Burton. (I never liked the picked bass sound of this Flotsam and Jetsam guy.) |

It's hard to say anything bad about Jason Newsted after you meet him though, he is the nicest guy in the rock world I think. But Cliff was incredible and meant so much to that band it's silly. I think the Black album sounds awesome, it's just more like AC/DC jock rock than thrash which is what they had done prior to that stuff. You gotta admit though, they are worth hundreds of millions of dollars now so they have used their craft and their resources wisely. War |

I think the Black album was some AMAZING songwriting and somewhat innovative production and is a classic album with some of the most memorable songs in rock history. Enter Sandman being the biggest obviously, followed by Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May Roam, Sad But True, The Unforgiven... few albums have this many well written songs. Despite what the diehard fans would like to hear, the Black album is what will make Metallica float in rock history.

I think that The Black Album was great. I think that they should have ditched Bob Rock after that album though. I think he got great performances out of them. But instead of learning from what Bob Rock got out of them, they settled on letting him run the show.

I've been a Metallica fan since Kill em all- I love Puppets most of all- it is in my top 5 of all time. I rate the Black Album really highly as what it is, a great crossover album by a band who I wished never crossed over. I wish they could have written darker and heavier albums, like Slayer- not gotten lighter and more commercial. The Black Album is, in my opinion, a great album with some excellent songs but it isn't in my top ten or even probably my top 50. I like it though- certainly more than anything that followed it.

Yes it is a good probably great albulm. By another band not by Speed Metal Royalty. What from the Black record is Speed Metal? Nothing off the Black albulm can touch the first three Metallica records. Great record just not great from them IMO.

Most probably the Black Album is the most listened to album in my entire collection. Love the songs, production and the drumming ![]() Of course Master of Puppets and ...And justice for all are classics as well - the later being probably my fave Metallica Album if someone asked me right now. Love/Hate thing with the production on Justice though, but incredible songs and such beautiful guitar harmonies in a lot of songs and a great dark atmosphere (not as pitch black as Slayer of course but still...)

I LOVED Metallica....until the black album......which IMHO was what really spawned jock rock.

I've got to be honest, I don't see how you can be a person who really "gets" metal and still like the Black Album. Too me it is "saferock". There is nothing rebellious or dangerous about it. That record to me represents the departure from any metal/punk roots and a metamorphosis that led them into the corporate rock world. They almost should have changed the name of the band at that point. Although they have achieved great financial success, IMHO they have become somewhat of a corporate parody of themselves. It's a bummer because I can still remember what it was like first hearing Master of Puppets and being in total awe of this new style of music.

Exactly contrary to what someone else said on here, I think the production, songwriting, and drumming all SUCK on this album. The songwriting suffered the same way it did on And Justice For All.... no song dynamics. No up and downs, no exciting parts.... The Black Album is one of the most boring albums ever to dare to call itself metal. The production was probably hampered by the plodding songs, but everything just seems static. Nothing moves. It's like a lump that just sits there and bores the shit out of you. Everyone loves Hetfields guitar sound, but I think it's thin and completely lacks balls on this record. The drum sounds are great though. Which leads me to the drumming. Could any metal drummer be more safe, pedestrian, and lazy than Lars Ulrich? He is the worlds most overrated drummer. If some of you think that The Black Album contains good metal drumming, you are incredibly far removed from the world of real metal. The bar was raised a long time ago and Lars is no where even close to it. Hell, he's not even a good standard rock drummer. I've seen teenagers outplay him in speed, ferocity, technique, groove, and creativity. All that said, I really hope their new album is good. I don't want to hate Metallica, but it's hard when their last good material was 20 years ago, and they've done nothing but get bigger, richer, and shittier since. |

| I would hope that artists would progress rather than regress. It would have been nice to see them push the boundries even further rather than dumb down the music so it would fit in a radio format.

| Lives for gear | I wouldn't call Fear of the Dark, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and Somewhere In Time even remotely the same album. Don't speak of things you don't know. tutt

| LOL! I know what you're saying! I almost said something when he used Iron Maiden as an example because Iron Maiden is still making great records.
