Looking for a particular electric guitar tone...

Help!

I'm trying to get a really rich, dark distortion tone out of a Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue and a Les Paul. I can't turn the amp up too loud, cause of kids/neighbors. I have two Tube Screamers that I've tried in series with different settings. But I think I probably need a different pedal to get the distortion that I want.

I'm looking for something that sounds like the background distorted guitar on Aimee Mann's "You Could Make a Killing" on the album "I'm With Stupid." I suspect this is Jon Brion playing guitar there. I'd love to know what created those tones, but will be satisified to get close with the gear I have now plus a cool pedal.

Any thoughts?

Jon Brion are you out there?

THD Hotplate, brother. Get the tone you want from your amp (a Deluxe with a Les Paul will do "rich" and "dark" all day long with ease) ...just...make it quieter.

Tube screamers will not do this. A fuzz box with a tone control is the right direction. Cranking a reissue deluxe reverb is not likely the right direction for that particular sound. Try filtering the signal before it hits the amp. Your guitar's tone and volume controls are your friend.

The hot plate is a good option for what you describe. With a fender amp and lots of cut (-12db) it gets dark. There are also a couple of switched on the unit to change the tone somewhat. It's about the same price as an expensive boutique pedal.
