Very specific Fatso question Ok I'm thinking of adding a quick compressor to my Vox chain. I have a La2a which I tend to use quite sparingly 3-5 db of GR and as expected I need something to "catch" the transients in the past I have used an 1176 in series to iron things out. So my question is do I give the Fatso a go in this application. I will get one to try so I'm not asking you to make my mind up about anything except trying it. The additional features of the Fatso for tracking to digital are probably the biggest selling point of this unit to me. Am I being cheap or can this box do a reasonable job of both ? Jam

do you have the option of trying one out? of course, that would be the best option, but i think that it would be worth a shot. according to empirical lab's website the attack range is 1ms-200ms, release range is .05sec-3.5 sec. the one 'downside' to the compressor section is the fixed attack/release presets but there may be one that works great for your needs. i think it would be a useful tool to have in the arsenal.ymmv. good luck, joshua

That is essentially what I have been doing lately for vocals. Avalon 737 (about 2-3db of comp)--->Fatso (tracking comp 5-7db). Sounds great!

I love the fatso on vocals more than the distressor...it takes out sibilance and can be set much faster...meaning...because of its limited control..it will work very well or not....more the half of the time...very well. TIm

Yes, the tracking comp (both leds on) is the only one I seem to use on the fatso. I think Dave Derr mentioned it was the 1176 emulation of the three available comps. Also be sure to try a gain control on the Fatso's inserts. It allows alot more flexibility in dialing in the amount of warmth vs. compression without complicating the Fatso's usage too much. Pete

I use the Fatso all the time. For vocals I use the buss comp with some warmth after a trakker set to optical. Gives a very transparent compression with a warm sound. The buss setting also works great on ( lo and behold) the mix buss. Otherwise the tracking setting works on almost anything. The Fatso is definately my favorite piece of gear. In combination with a trakker it's a killer.

I too think it can work as a 2 bus....I used it recently to warm up a 2 song demo being sent to a well known indie label. Check the balance with a tone generator...close enough.....a few tenth's of a db aren't going to interfere with my creative process. PT screws everything up much more anyway. Tim
