Some Punk For Some Of You Punkers!

Music Machine got shelved for having a threatening look and sound for 1965. They had one black glove each and had heavy nasty guitars! I would say that Punk was born way before the mid 70's in Los Angeles. Thought I'd share with you one of my favorite bands.

Keith is a rad bass player! I didn't know he later became a producer/engineer. Small world.

Man.... I pride myself on having a pretty broad musical knowledge but I have never heard of these guys.
Thanks so much for turning me onto them.

I see them as being a precursor to the Ramones, the Birthday Party and maybe the Radio Birdman.

That rocked!

I thought the kinks were the first punk band. Also I wonder if my generation
was really just a punk a song? Punks and Mods

the 70's Punk era started in NY and England. Ramones pistols clash.
Never new it started in LA? Didn't LA start the glam thing?
Were the NY Dolls from LA? LOL

Music Machine sounds more like the Turtles or Dave Clark five than a punk band.

haha 10 years before the pistols. The albums to get are Ignition, Beyond the Garage and "Turn on" Sometimes under Bonniwell Music Machine. I think that is the whole discography. I don't tell too many people about them. They have a myspace page runned by Sean Bonniwell the singer/songwriter. Some of thier stuff is mellow happy 60's stuff the label made them record but a lot of it is raw.

There were plenty of garage bands in Los Angeles that had the punk spirit. The world wasn't ready for them. To each his own. There was a lot of stuff that didn't get recognized or accepted in this great land Music Machine happens to be from LA.

My buddy just picked up a Gretsch 6120 with a junior body... think they went out of production recently. OHHHHhhhh man, what a beautiful guitar. Sounds like a smoking shotgun.

AM radio hit ..and good cause of the strong vocal. I ran out, got it, and disected it. Didn't know Olsen was in it though.

Yep, I remember those guys, or actually, that one hit, "Talk Talk" from way back when. I still have it on rotation in my archive collection.

Thanks for the memories. Very cool.

The Ramones? Puh-lease. Their debut was in 76.

Iggy's Raw Power was 73.

But, as has been observed, it was wanting to break out long before...lots of isolated songs leaning in that direction prior....

Cool band though, Nutra! Thanks for that!

Cheers.

YouTube - The Music Machine - Cherry cherry

Flute on a Neil Diamond song punk? Hmmm.

I usually think of these guys:

YouTube - The Sonics

Although I couldn't find The Witch.

And I'd guess they inspired by this guy..

If you like the Music Machine, also check out the Seeds. They were another garagey, proto-punk LA band from that era.

Actually if you knew about the music machine you would know that the label made them do the covers. There are a few covers the label made them do. Punk rock is a state of mind and it always was. They have songs that have that edge and for that time period it wasn't a good thing to a label.

The Sonics are a newer band right? I like that music machine embarked a blue collar bottom of the soul kind of darkness especially for it's time. They were pretty gritty and had an intimidating look for being on a major label.

I think I like this one 'Eagle Never Hunts the Fly' more than Talk Talk. The sound is pretty bad on this clip, but the song is damn cool. I haven't heard a lot of stuff from back then with character this dark and aggressive.

If you guys are impressed by The Music Machine, you need to check out the Back From The Grave comps for songs like The Crusher by the Novas, Rats Revenge by the Rats or Psycho by the Swamp Rats.

The Sonics started in Tacoma, WA in 1960, their first single was The Witch in 64.

The Witch is here:

MySpace.com - The Sonics - TACOMA, Washington - Garage - www.myspace.com/sonicsthe

Great song.

The Sonics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dead Moon and The Wipers are also good (later) garage punk from the NW.
