Thread Starter | Budget Compressors?
I'd love a pair of Distressors, but I just don't have the budget right now. However, I really could use something decent for recording drums, bass, vox, gtrs. Currently recording all digital through a Digi002. Any recommendations? Are the dbx products worth anything? Would love something under $500 a channel. Thanks. |

FMR Audio RNC. $175. 2 channels. Tons of posts about this unit here and elsewhere. http://mercenary.com/realniccom.html Use supernice mode on bass if you don't want to lose as much low end. Won't really do limiting (prevent clipping on your digi002 a/d's), but is the best bang for the buck in your price range. Transparent, unless you use it in regular mode and really crush stuff. |

dbx 160x or xt's will work well on kick, snare, guitar, maybe bass, maybe the right vox. It's always good to have a few channels around. Get an RNC and maybe 2 of these and you'll be set for a while.

Forgot to mention some of the older Ashley compressors... I have not used them, but a buddy has been on a buying binge of older ashleys from ebay... apparently some models are considered dbx-ish. apparently good for drums.... $100 or so per channel. |

Another vote for 160x's and rnc's... you'll get a lot more use out of these than just drum apps.

I like the DBX163x. Its a great parallel comp for bass, kick, and toms. It can also petty much crush a track. When pushed it loses some highs and has a litltle self noise, but I really like its character when I just barely have it limiting on bass and kick. I have a sequential pair of black Ashly's that rock on guitar. I also have a blue that I use on vox occasionally to give em some balls. Beez |
