Room Acoustics

I may be needing to move my studio to a different room. The new room is 8ft10in wide, by 14ft10in long by 7ft7in high.

My plan is to have a 4'x2', 4in deep bass trap in each corner plus a 2'x2' in each corner to ceiling intersection on the front or rear wall (which woul db better?). I also have some 2'x4' 2" deep traps that I will locate at the first reflection points on the side walls next to the monitors and I have some Auralex foam panels I will locate on the rear wall, front wall and side walls to help with high frequency reflections. My concern is with the room size. Are those dimensions really bad? Would the amount of trapping be enough? Where should I locate the desk with the monitors (I am currently thinking facing the 8ft10in wall, but I am not sure how far back.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

I have a 15' x 12' x 8' room. Basically a box. I used Auralex LENRD bass traps, which have worked well, and came with the Auralex foam kit. If I were doing it now I would probably use the super chunking method. Other posts about this are here. If you do go with any foam product, use T pins to mount it, not the glue.

Good Luck

Van

I think that would be a good start, but I could see you almost doubling that amount of bass traps. Maybe think about also straddling ceiling to wall corners if you can.

"I also have some 2'x4' 2" deep traps that I will locate at the first reflection points on the side walls next to the monitors and I have some Auralex foam panels I will locate on the rear wall, front wall and side walls to help with high frequency reflections."

The only thing different I would do is put 4" (or thicker) panels on the back wall to help with low end nulls. The foam will not do anything for that.

I have seen better and worse. But with enough bass trapping you should be able to make that room work

"Where should I locate the desk with the monitors (I am currently thinking facing the 8ft10in wall, but I am not sure how far back."

You want to sit 38% of the room length. So you would sit about 5.32 feet from the front wall. See this link for proper set up GIK Acoustics presents Acoustics Primer: Some Basics on Acoustics.

Here is a layout of a room that is close to your size.

If you glaze egg cartons with kraft mayo you will have more depth in tone using true bypass wall coordinates. Place them in only 3 corners of the room not 4. You will notice exclusive benefits. Capitol records room C used this technique for Jeff Becks last album and it sounds great.
