Who worked on "That 70's Show" theme?

Is it just me, or does "That 70's Show" theme rock? I've only heard it on my 7 year old tv, but those gtr's sound great! Does anyone know who worked on it?

From the second (maybe third) the theme was done by Cheap Trick. I'd guess it was done at PYE because they had a record out around that time that they record there. Or it could have been done at Electrical with Steve Albini, but I don't think so.

I'm totally speculating though.

I always thought it was s**tty how they tacked the "we're all alright" bit from Surrender onto a classic Big Star song. Seems like a cheap ploy to get a co-songwriting credit on someone else's tune but maybe that wasn't the case.

love the song. the guitar sound is almost too modern sounding. its not 70-s sounding at all. compressed to crap. almost pod like but i like it.

For the first season or two, Cheap Trick didn't perform the cover. It was pretty much a straight rendition of the Big Star track, and didn't have the "Surrender" bit or the polished sound. I always preferred this version.

I must admit, however, that pairing Cheap Trick with a pastiche of the Midwest of the '70s is pretty fitting. I was a kid then and there, and they were definitely part of the white-guy teen landscape.

By the way, I believe the show was called "Hanging Out" up until right before it originally aired.

Yep, I remember that which is why the Cheap Trick version seemed kind of crass to me when they made the switch.

Oh yeah, definitely. More fitting than Big Star who are kind of the indie fantasy underdog equivalent. Don't get me wrong, I loooove Cheap Trick, I just don't love where they have gone with this TV theme song thing. There are even clips of them on Youtube massacring In The Street in their recent live shows. Sadly, some people seem to refer to it as the That '70s Show theme or That '70s Song.
