That's easy. I want a monster P-bass mudslide sound, so I do this:

That's a plugin I made called FathomFive, which seems like it's a huge bass boost but also has behaviors that seem like compression or overdrive (if you push it higher in frequency range) even though there's no compression or distortion present. It's my new favorite bass plugin EVER, is Mac AU format, and will cost you $60 :D

Well, you did ask!

Beyer M88 and an LDC on the cabinet with a DI feed as well.
Everything else is the player and the bass.

Bass is one of the easiest things to record with a great player- and almost impossible with a not so great one.

Good player> good bass> good d.i.> good pre>good comp.

Around here it looks like this:

Me> early 90's Tobias> Countryman> Avalon 737> La2a.

Yes, the 737 sounds great on bass. Yes, I'm double compressing. I find that I prefer -3db x2 over -6db.

And some basses record really well, sit right in the mix with no extra effort, others you have to push, pull, squeeze and coerce in the mix.

My Ken Smith CR bass sounded great live, was a dream to play, and sounded great by itself, but took a lot of work to fit in a mix. Never sounded terrible, but took work. Maybe too many tonal options. My Fender Precision is a plug and play bass - rarely have to do anything except set the level. My jazz fretless is similar - add a little drive to get some growl and away we go.

And like octatonic writes, good bass players are a dream to record.

Running a bass through an 1176 or LA2A is good times. Great problem solvers.

I forgot, we've got a 76 p-bass that sits in the studio I work at. That'll pretty much do it.
