Daking Mic Pre/EQ: Should I use mine on kick or snare?

I just have one channel of Daking. Help me use it wisely when tracking drums.

Daking on kick, Sytek on snare?

or

Sytek on kick, Daking on snare?

Which combo and why?

Thanks!

My UA 2-610 will be on overheads
My other Sytek channels will be on toms and room.

If you're using microphones too, it would help to know what's going where.

I'm asking because , for example if you had an RE-20 can be positioned to get as much shell or beater as you want, so if you've got the right mic for the job, I'd use the sytec there. If there's a 57 on the snare, then you'll probably need to EQ that on the Daking.

What if the Sytek sounded better on overheads, the UA 610 on kick and the Daking on snare?

You own all of them, tell US which is best!

It's all a matter of taste and experimenting is what forces us to learn what to listen for. I think you're better off hearing the differences and deciding WHY something might be better than the other.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything.

+1

How is anyone supposed to know what some mic sounds like through some pre, when it's positioned in some way, on some drums in some room?

Not trying to be a jerk either, but you're the best person to say what it sounds like!

my first response would be to tell you to just try it....anyway...see what sounds GOOD to you.

that being said. i use my dakings on kick and snare pretty much exclusively...after using a myriad of various pres in that application...what sounds best to ME is my dakings.

i also tend to use my sytek on overheads and rooms when tracking drums.

i used that particular chain on all the tunes on this record for sure.

a great band from detroit. we cut everything live in a room. have to check my notes...but almost 98% certain that the kick was a d6 into the daking...the snare was a 57 and probably a beyer 201 taped together into daking pre/eqs...overheads were at4031's into the sytek. room was probably a royer stereo ribbon into sytek. dont think i even had tom mics on this gig !!

good luck with it. i personally dont think you can go wrong with the daking on ANYTHING !!

i would probably relegate it to snare if i only had one daking to use....but, that is a hard choice...cutting around 220 and boosting 80 on the daking eq is usually all i need to make a kick HUGE.

peace,

addendum.

only "TEXAS" on the strange's myspace page was from the session i used the dakings and syteks on.

here is another band i produced lately...kick and snare and mono room were daking preamps. overheads were sytek...

i still would recomend giving it a shot and LISTENING to what works for you !!! both preamps sound great on drums !

best,

The mics, and how they are used will make a bigger difference than anything...

Thanks for the input.

It is true that I need to expereiment and decide for myself, and I will. I just wanted to see what some other guys are doing the most with the Daking.

It will probably come down to how this particular snare sounds in my room. If it is going to need EQ, I will go with the Daking on it, and Sytek on kick. I have been pretty successful getting a good kick with the Sytek, (along with plugin EQ and comp.)

Here are the mics by the way:

My mics on this session:

Kick - EV n/d 868
Snare - Audix i5 or 57
Toms - (2) EV n/d 468
Overheads - (2) 4033
Room - NTK or SM7

I also may try miking the snare bottom and using one of my FF800 pres on it. If I do, is it common to flip the phase on the bottom mic?

Thanks. I am about to start getting sounds. Recording is too fun!

Hey War, I bought the Daking from you btw. Today is the first day to use it on drums!

Well, I tried both yesterday, and the Daking absolutely ruled on kick. The pre alone was audibly better when compared to the Sytek. When I started EQing with the Daking, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Amazing.

This was my first real experience with quality outboard EQ, and I am just thrilled.

I am glad you're hearing the results! Glad you're experimenting on your own though.

Thanks for letting me take care of you by the way!

I have a copy of their CD actually...great kick sound as you mentionthumbsup

But in the end it works for because of the way you work, the mics you use, the way you like to position your mics, they way you like to eq, the way you hear.

I'm guessing the pre you use is the least of your considerations - as long as it's a quality pre - yes/no?

I love Daking on everything! But I REALLY love the way it sounds on kick. After I sell the beast below, I'll be getting more Daking rack pre/eq's.
