SM7b on hit vocals?

I also have heard/been told, that a shure SM7b has been/is used, on many modern rock / popular recordings for vocals. Of course the pre-amp is going to be a big part of the sound, but does anyone know for fact, some albums this mic was used on for the main vox? I would just like to hear a few examples, I am certainly not doubting the greatness I heard.

That mic (or at least the original SM7 version) has been used on more hit records than any other mic probably. Even Michael Jackson's thriller.

Noit that they are big succesful records, but all of the Lamb OF God records are like 90% SM7, and I know a good portion of metal/hard rock bands use em cause you can hold it!

I own one and use it on pretty much everything but girls who can actually sing.

ALSO, it's good on hi hat!

Michael Jackson (Billie Jean)
Red Hot Chillie Peppers (everything)
Black Crows (everything)
Billy Idol (everything)
Don Was (everything he Produces)

.... all reason enough for me to buy one (1989)

There is supposed to be a difference between the original, reissue and SM-7B, I've never heard the new ones. Set the EQ to FLAT and take off the foam wind screen and crank it up, you'll LOve it.

Also GREAT for GTR amps, Kick Drums, Hi Hats, Sax .. it will take a beating.

muse, white stripes, kings of leon, wilco......etc etc....it's just a cool mic - so cool to be able to just hold onto it and get into the vibe of the track....cops eq sweetly......it's not that it's 'GREAT' like it's some vintage-sounding glamour-puss but it's just solid and always GOOD!!!

sweet. sounds like a killer mic. like I stated in my other posts, I'm thinking about running it into a FMR RNP or Grace 101.

Basically anything by brendan o'brien
Incubus, rhcp, brad, stone temple pilots, pearl jam, possibly bruce springsteen? can anyone confirm this?

I run my sm7b into a grace 101, and looooove the result (not for everything of course, but does work for a lot of voices/styles)

more recently, John Mayer (In Repair video from Village Sessions), Maroon5 (latest album making video), etc.

did somebody say Prince?

altho it's more of the singer than the mic type of thing. imo, MJ's vox sound quality isn't what i'd call "high fidelity"... but his talent will ooze out of any mic. i wouldn't be suprised if Bruce picked SM7 b/c of MJ's dynamic range.

Not true; Black was FET 47. However, Load and Reload were SM7 (except for a couple of ballads), and so was St. Anger.

The foam is attached to plastic ring around the body.
Work the ring away gently, and it slides off.
