| Gear interested | Audio vs. Life - Electric/Titanium Panties
I've got a serious and depressing question. I'm an aspiring engineer and I've been having some success at my internship - I'm working 1 on 1 with clients, making some money, and spending ridiculous hours at the studio. As far as audio goes, my life is amazing and I feel I've got a bright future. Electric Panties and Titanium Panties were the board names that my girlfriend of 4 years used to post on gearslutz. She left me last week. Why? Because I was so focused on audio and my band that I almost completely ignored her. I'm trying to keep this short, so basically I've realised that I lost something far more important than audio and I don't know where I want to go with my life. The question is: Is it possible to balance a career in sound with a happy relationship/family? If so, what advice can you give me? I know there are a number of family men/women on here and I always smile when I see a thread about family or children - I know audio people are generally passionate people, but how do you find a balance? Thanks a lot for reading. |

That's a sad story man. My 2 cents... Don't believe the bullshit. I mean, don't believe that you have to be an intern working 12 hours a day just to make a living in the future. All of the fratboy-like relationships that exist between engineer and AE/intern are ridiculous. Don't buy the Hollywood attitude hype. Keep the place clean, do your job right and tight, and don't get in the way. Be talented, make yourself known. There's alot more going on in life than audio. People think that working in audio is so much "better" than being say, an investment banker or a salesman. Read these two sentences: "I work every hour away in computer sales, and my wife left me" "I work every hour away in AUDIO, and my wife left me" ...the outcomes EQUALLY suck. Don't believe the hype. Have fun, make money, live balanced.

| This isn't just an audio industry problem. You'll figure out what's important to you eventually. In the mean time, make sure you earn enough that you have time for what's important without working 80 hour weeks. Unless you decide that what you do for work is that important to you...... -tINY |
