500 series Desert Island Edition

In the thick of all this 500 series rave before, during and after AES I started thinking of a Desert Island situation for our beloved 500 series. Before I start, this island has power...so none of those comments...

Here is the situation....you can only have FOUR modules...ANY modules you choose...which would you pick?

My choices....

Shadow Hills MONO Gamma
Chandler Germanium
Buzz Compressor
EMPEQ

So hard to choose.....what are your 4?

ok ill play. ill consider modules i have as well as modules i dont have.

Buzz Audio Elixir
Avedis MA5
A Designs EM-PEQ
Buzz Audio Essence

id have to have one clean pre and one colored. for the EQ i want something with some vibe. for the compressor i chose one that i know will get the job done smoothly every time.

It's hard to say because it really depends on the style of music I'm recording. If I want detailed and extended in the highs, I reach for a Buzz Elixir. If I want mid punch with just enough lows I reach for a Great River. If I want soft and super fat then I reach for an OSA MP1-L3. Probably the best thing to do is reach for those units you know will work in different situations, and maybe in stereo pairs. That way you have enough for kick, snare, and stereo overheads for preamps, and to compress kick and snare (or overheads if you are going retro ala The Who type of sound). I would say unless you have a really fundamental collection of great mics and preamps, don't worry so much about the EQ....if the preamps, mics and conversion are all in order (And we're assuming the control room and tracking environment are doing well), then compression is a great way to add character and dynamic control to your mix. EQ is probably the last thing to worry about, all things again being in perfect order.

I'd go an Api 512, Great River MP-500NV, Api 550b, Buzz Audio Essence, and I'd fill the rest with drinking water.

I'd go all Eisen Audio because then I would have some design and assembly work to keep me occupied while waiting for the band to show up on the desert island.

Well that would be ukelele and log drum I presume.

I'd go with a Purple Biz, a 512C, an Action and a 550B. But only 4 sucks. I need at least 6 unless there's amazing hula girls there. Then I might consider going with only 4......

Yeah, but unless you are picking one or more of the double wide modules, a standard API lunch box holds SIX (6) modules!

And we all know the siren call of the empty slots in a lunch box, don't we?

Otherwise, I'd go with what I already have -- pending the new releases of course:

2 x API
1 x A-Designs P-1
1 x Purple Biz

Well, if we're just stuffing it with pres, give me 4 512's and I'll be just fine.

If I had to mix it up, I'd go for two 512 and two of the purple biz.

Do I get to throw a pair of eq's in the remaining slots? That would be nice.

Where can I pick mine up?

3 Eisens - a neve-ish, an api-ish, and a lundahl
1 EM Blue

You'd definitely want to put a panel on the open slots, so the bugs and critters can't get inside and eat the wiring.
