hardwareconnections : help with 003/mbox2pro -pres/ADDA

I read that if I want to connect a AD/DA converter with the mbox2pro or 003 I do so using the spdif. I have never owned an AD/DA or a mic pre. How do this all connect???? What is the signal chain?

Mic > mic pre> AD> spdif ( 003/mbox2pro)?

Mic > mic pre> AD> spdif ( 003/mbox2pro)?
Exactly.

You're bypassing the pre + AD on the digi interface, and going straight in digitally.

Only thing to remember is clocking. One device needs to be master, and the other one slave. You need to decide which one is likely to have the most stable clock (or experiment to see if you can hear a difference).

If your external AD is your choice, then it's easy - you just set the 003/mbox to "external SPDIF" in hardware setup. If it's the 003/mbox that you're using, you have to leave this set to internal, and set the external AD to slave - and you'll then need a second digital connection going from digi interface to external AD.

What this connection is will depend on what digi interface, and what your AD is. 003/mbox2pro has word clock, and many external ADs can clock to this. Other Mboxes and 002 don't, so the only option is using the SPDIf out - and some standalone ADs may not have SPDIF in to reference to.

Some say the 002's own AD conversion suffers if it's clocked externally, so that may or may not be true, and may or may not affect the 003 as well. Something to be aware of if you're using the internal pres/AD conversion as well as a standalone pre+AD.

Does all that make sense?!

I think so. Again, I have bought any hardware -pres, ad/da before. It might help to see pictures of the connectors on a mic pre and AD/DA. Any links I could check out ( just for an example- any decent pre and AD/DA will do I think). On the Lavry site ,for instance, I couldn't find any photo of how it connects, ....

on the lavry site look on the spec list...for example, the AD10 lists:

External Word Clock or AES sync for 32-100kHz operation.

So that could clock to an MBox 2 or 003 (but you probably would want it as master!)

24 bit AES/SPDIF and optical outputs

so SPDIF in (optical or coax, but using coax for the 003 frees up the optical for ADAT input).
