Is it really OK to like 30 SECONDS TO MARS

I know that everything's a matter of personal taste and there are no set rules to govern what we like.
Having said that... I'm a recovering indie/alt/space rock guy from the midwest. All of my '90's favorites have disbanded (HUM, Shiner, The Jesus Lizard, Afghan Whigs) and I must be getting desperate to fill that void because I'm really into the (2) 30 Seconds to Mars songs that I've heard.

Does anyone know more about these guys (personal live or recording experience)? 'Cuz my guess is that they're either:
1) A Very well produced marketing machine with angst appeal and a lot of "hand holding" & autotuning in the studio.
or...
2) A truely great band that can afford the best production and videos because of their singer's acting career... but will never get any "indie cred" for this same reason.

I'm really hoping that it's #2, because I'm starting to question my manhood and am almost ready to pull the trigger on buying their CD. - that's huge for me since the last CD I bought was NIN's "The Fragile."
Opinions?

I've seen them live. Twice. Not a good band.

A friend let me borrow their first CD. Half the songs were alright and the other half were so bad I thought it was like a joke. Not like production wise but the song quality was almost like they did it on purpose to be funny. I dont think they were trying to be funny. Im not a fan of theirs.

So it's just slick prod on the second album and really overblown videos, huh? No insiders?
... p.s. I just paid $10 for the new Radiohead.

eyeliner rox

This new generation of glam rock is getting boring. What is the difference between this stuff and 80z big hair and makeup? The only thing I can think of is that this generation sings songs about self loathing and heart break, rather than good times and drug abuse. But this is the same stuff that girls used to drag their boy friends to in the 80z in a different but the same package.

this guy comes out with a sign that says ALL STARR BAND what does that mean?

30 Seconds to Mars.... Kills.... or The Kill
Its okay to like them... I also okay to hate them.... Whatever side of the fence you are on the answer to your question was number 1... No... They will never have indie cred, because they went straight to a major.... ~

Whatever floats yer boat. Production is top notch, but personally I can't stand the 7th grade lyrics. "This is who I really am, finally found myself, waaah waaaah, I-- Am-- Finished-- with Youuuuuuuuuuuuuu!"

I like some of thier music sound, but Their singer Jared has a very small range, and sounds like a wussy when he screams, he sounds like a little kid throwing a tantrem when he screams, if he could just not do that, all would be better with the world......

Its aight to like em though dude, I don't hate them and sometimes listen to a full song on the Radio. I like their music.

I'm gonna go with no on this one too....I'm pretty open to just about any band, and rarely just say something is terrible, but Jared Leto bugs the crap out of me! hahah...the rest of the band is fine...maybe they should hook up with Zach De la Roca...haha

I guess if you go back to the "My So Called Life" pics it should ave been obvious. On the up side, I was thinking that maybe I was getting too old & set in my ways to rock anymore, but Jared's got a couple years on me & is proving me wrong. Maybe 36 is then new 18?

Then again, If I decided to wear eyeliner I don't think my wife would go for it.

I like the 2nd record, good tunes, good production and they don't come off as trying to hard......that being said, I can understand why people don't like them, but I don't watch videos or follow trends, I just like good tunes.

Not to mention that Jerod Leto throws a fit anytime someone says they don't like his band. Didn't he attack elijah wood after hearing elijah said he didn't like the band?

look up "the revolution smile" if you were into Hum. "circa survive" is actually pretty good if you can get by the singers voice ...which grows on you. Check out "Saosin" and "Year of the Rabbit" as well.

I actually like about 2 of 30 seconds to mars' songs.

30STM ROCKS!!!! I love both of their records. It's totally ok to like 30STM. The 2nd record is obviously superior as far as the song writing goes. I also really dig the production. Hey Audionaut, there's no need to question your manhood. Jump on the 30STM bandwagon.

Cheers,
Creston

A friend of mine told me they were not that bad live. He is very into new emo / rock stuff and told me the sound was great & they played well ... so ....

But , my opinion, is not to ask yourself too much question, if you like the music then it's great. After all those year, in the indie stuff I'm getting more & more tired about the convention of the "indie". Just listen to what do you like ... I can listen to Marvin Gaye, just after Neurosis, just after Shellac and after put Thursday or Interpol or anything ...

JUST LISTEN WHAT YOU FEEL IS GOOD FOR YOU.
/My 2 cents.

Nick.

I've got all their CDs,.. Pretty good band, with catchy songs.

They're nto too bad live either, which is a good thing compared to a lot of other bands in the similar genre.

YEAH, their live backing tracks sound good alright.

I've seen them when Leto's guitar isn't even amped up.
