Warped record/warbled synth sound Hello all. Apologies if this has been discussed a thousand times already, or in the wrong place, but I couldn't really find enough answers searching the boards. I'm wondering if people know how a lot of the warbled/warped sounds ala Boards Of Canada/Warp Records is achieved? I've tried the Izotope Vinyl plug, with much success for lofi, wear, dust and scratches (it's really a fantastic plugin...and free!), but unfortunately the plug's "warp" effect doesn't work in the AU version in Logic, much to my chagrin. :( So if there's any more suggestions for plugs/gear that does this, I'm all ears! Cheers, Rob

All you need is a Vibrato plugin - or any modulated delay. I only know VST plugins, and there are dozens of freebies that can do that. If your DAW has a pitch shifting function you could draw in a graph or automate it. Any flanger or single-band chorus is just a modulated delay - if you can set the wet/dry balance to 100% wet then you have a Vibrato, which is what you are looking for.

fulltone tube tape echo... zvex lo-fi loop junk is the best for the warble sound, but you have to engage a loop for it to do its magic. the tape echo gets pretty damn close http://media.zvex.com/lofi.mov

Best way is definitely with actual tape. Go to a thrift store and buy some cheap old reel to reel thingie (you're going for lo-fi anyway so cheap is good)...just record your stuff onto the tape and record it back into the computer while manipulating the reels with your hands however you like. A bit more work than using a plugin, but I promise you'll be happier with the results....plus it's a whole lot more fun....

| Lives for gear | Roland Chorus Echo. Use just the chorus and switch the direct signal to off.
