Vocal chain in the lush Billy Sherrill arrangements?

I love the rich tunes he did with lots of strings and bg vocals.

Regarding the lead vocals, I'm interested in what would have comprised a typical chain... any knowledge and/or good guesses appreciated.

Mics
Pre's (Console)
Compresssion and typical settings
Reverb/FX and typical settings

Thanks

Vocal Mics: all Neumann, 47s, 67s, and 87s.

Pres: the Quonset Hut's custom (CBS) console.

Compression: la2 (post vocal rides) if at all.

Reverb: EMT plates.

CBS also embraced DolbyA throughout the 70s.

Billy Sherrill is known as a record guy and a song guy. He has never cared too much about the particulars of the equipment. He was sometimes known to not even hang around except for when "the hit" was being recorded. Just listen from his office.

FWIW the CBS console I saw in San Francisco used UREI mike preamp and booster amp cards. They had their own proprietary eq that wasn't labeled.

The studio also had something like 6 RCA BA-6 limiters in the rack.

What OKden said ;)

My wife was one of Billy's artists in the early 80s at CBS. I double-checked with her and Snake Reynolds - The mic was always an 87 on her and the other outboard gear is pretty much as listed above.

Take care,
