They are of the "Changed my life" level of greatness. I have 3 cards and just about all the plugs. If you don't love them then you have a major problem hearing things IMHO.
And I'm NOT exagerating - not even one little tiny bit. I'm not comparing them to outboard just as plugins.

I second that, word for word. There aren´t that many things in your set up, that you feel this way about IMO

if only they would make native plugins....computers are so fast these days and they're always getting faster. i can't imagine running a bunch of these plugins would be a cpu issue on the latest systems...

Love their 1176 LN. The SE version is good, also (the 'free' version you get with the card) - but sounds very different.

No, you need the card to run the UAD stuff.

My UAD plugs really helped me to understand how to use processing. One of the best purchases I ever made for my studio.

I also use my laptop a whole lot now and that is the only downside to them. I would have to buy more hardware to use them with my laptop.

I too wish they would make a native version with the same quality.

You need the card. It's one reason why we end up with good deals on the products - there's no piracy issue. I'm all for it.

The card is their security system as well as the processor for the plugin. That's why guys talk about having 2,3 or 4 cards. Each card increases the amount of plugins you can use simultaneously. It's a functional dongle.

I have not used these cards, but have only heard of ONE issue/person who did not care for them. He is actually an audio instructor and said they don't sound "bad" but color the sound in a way that he does not find useful. He stated that he likes as clean a signal as he can get and by adding the plugs from the card the signal becomes colored a bit and he doesn't like the change. Other than that, I have heard awesome things about them and would LOVE to check them out for myself!

Different plugins use different amounts of processing power. A pultec pro uses more DSP than the 1176SE for example. I think there is a page on the UA website that details how much DSP is required for each instance of a plugin.

To give you some point of reference with one card you could expect to cover 4 to 5 tracks with some featured UAD plugins. Maybe an 1176LN on the snare, Pultec on bass, 1176LN and pultec pro on lead vocals, La2a and oxford on BGV. THere will still be room for other plugs to run on the card but those are the beginning of the serious plugins. The Neve stuff generally takes significantly more DSP.

Most people want more cards and the general complaint is that the cards aren't powerful enough and that UA should make something with more power on one card. Not many people complain about the quality of the plugins.

So what the audio instructor meant was the plugins actually changed the audio? That's crazy! Did someone tell him about the bypass buttons?

They're effin' great! Also, I'm continuosly surprised at how often UAD gives discounts on their plugins, or at how many times they're giving out free vouchers - for all kinds of reasons , like just last month was a $50 gift just for moving headquarters. How cool is that?
