My tune got featured in theis months Sound On Sound magazine Mix Rescue......

I was pretty thrilled to get this and it was a great experience, apparantly SOS is the biggest selling recording arts magazine in the world, so it's good to know I'm famous now

The link below contains a before and after version of the song as mixed by Paul White, editor of SOS. To be honest when I knew I'd gotten it I made alot of changes to the original which was just a rough version anyway so they aren't directly comparable in every way. If I was to do it again I'd get in musicians who are into their craft as I am my songwriting rather than try play everything myself. That said it was a great lesson in the benefits of a pro mixer finishing off your work. The mix is alot lighter than I intened but it's definitely alot more proffesional sounding. Lessons learnt all round.

It was recorded at home in an untreated (and bad sounding!) room on Cubase SX, the drums are ezDrummer, the keys and strings are Reason and the mic is an AKG C300b through a Brick and LynxOne converters.

The before and after versions are at the end of the media player, tracks 9 & 10. Feed back and thoughts welcome.

sweet song bro. I like the feeling of the song, and the lyrics are feel good lyrics.

Paul's mix is a lot better. Lots of enhancements on the balance and the vocals themselves, but I'm not sure I like where he took the tones of the electric guitar. I guess its just preference. I feel they could have been tucked under a little more and fattened a tad.

Overall great song, and great mix in the end.

Nice one guys. It was a pretty cool thing to get. Although they seemed to have forgotten my contact details in the article so all those publishers will have to google me to access the power of my future hits.

Reptil: Hey! How are you? The song was recorded on those monitors I bought off you. God bless GS.

Thanks for sharing!

It's always instructive to see how bringing a few elements into focus can make a mix sound more up front and improve the impact. I might have done a few things differently (everyone's mileage does vary) but I think his basic instincts about what to focus on were pretty good, overall.

Good job and thanks again for sharing it and (the teaser for) the article with us. Good stuff!

Congrats dude!

Nice exposure and great tune!

I think Paul's mix is better and more polished sounding, however, I do feel its missing a bit of the original loose vibe of the tune which I liked.

I also feel that he missed an opportunity to make it bite a bit more (seeing that he took it in that direction somewhat).

Just goes to show different people's takes on songs....

nice one matey

very cool Props to you.

I can't believe you built up 60 tracks by yourself :P How do you play live?

BTW I thought your mix was very good, but I see what Paul did. It is a light feel good song and you had it hovering more in that low frequency range. Shifting the song to the higher end fits the theme of the song.

S!

Nice one guys. As I said it was great to get it. Although I too would go with one or two of the opinions above that it should have been meatier. There's a whole lot of heavy guitars on there that are barely audible.

As for the high track count? About 20 of them were hand claps so they took up a fair chunk! It's just a whole lot of fun too layer it all on!!!

Frobisher !!

Nice track, I had heard it before somewhere...I presume on the other forum, or your myspace page maybe.

Vocal is alot more radio ready on Paul's mix, although I agree that the decision to focus the climax on one guitar line missed the opportunity to shift the song up a gear towards the end. I can see his logic though.

Many ways to skin a cat, as they say...you should stick to your guns on the heavier second half IMHO.

Nice work.

Hi Nathan! So we have a bit of audio cross forum pollination going on here! Nice!

Point taken on the track. I was wondering if anyone would comment on the electric guitar sounds. There's alot of talk about PODs and I beleive that I can get very usable sounds from them. All the el gtrs on this are PODs. Any thoughts?
