Anyone bought a firestudio project yet?

Not the regular firestudio...the firestudio project. If so, where did you get it and what do you think of it? Definitely looks like a great unit for the $$ Has 114db dynamic range on pre's!

Answering my own thread..e. I was jonesin', so I got one...

Well one thing I was not aware of before I purchased was the infamous cpu spike problem whereby the cpu spikes in a cyclical manner every 5-8 seconds while the unit is turned on. Happens while unit is on--goes away when turned off. Don't know if happens to everyone, but has definitely happened to more than few...

I am Running XP SP2, P4 3.6, 1gb ram

Looks like it has been happening for close to a year with some people and appears that Presonus is aware of it. They claim that it does not affect audio, but I disagree depending on DAW you are using. I loaded up process explorer and saw that the process that spikes the cpu is a DPC (deferred procedure call
) which relates to IRQ handling and often result of drivers.

As it has been happening for ages and there is no fix, I may not keep the unit. I will wait and see what Presonus says....

does it affect the audio tho?

I am looking into getting one of these, but wanna make sure it isn't a bad driver problem here.

To clarify my previous post...the spikes were a known issue on the regular firestudio 2626, and people are also seeing them now on the FS projects.

On the bright side, I haven't seen or heard a direct correlation with the spikes and dropouts. I was getting some random pops and clicks, but I fiddled with system settings and havent heard any for a day now (changed processor scheduling from background to programs and back to background..weird)

Although I am told by Presonus that it should not have any effect on audio, my feeling is that the spikes have an effect on overall system performance, and I don't like the spikes present, regardless.

Presonus have been super helpful and a pleasure to work with, and there should be a driver update by the end of the year. I would give same advice that they gave others on the forum...buy from someplace that will allow you to return if you are not happy with it.

I am also trying out an echo audiofire 4 at the same time and I am finding that I get just a bit more clarity on the lows in the preamps with it, so I am torn at the moment. Unfortunately, the ASIO latency sucks on the AF and I am having problems with the 'multiclient' drivers, so I am reminded that you can't have everything ;)

I got one, and noticed the cpu spikes. No audio dropouts though. Everything seems to be working good with my setup. Hopefully the stability will continue.

Thanks t1mp!

Yep...I've researched the heck out of the spikes and noted the reasoning behind the spikes in this thread, if you are interested:

Alesis I/O, Konnekt, Firestudio, Dice-II chipset interfaces

You'll have to let me know what you think of the preamps. The unit sounds great and is nice and quiet...however, I notice that when recording 5 string bass through a sansamp bddi, I seem to clip the inputs pretty easily compared to some other units I've tried...

Yeah - looks sweet I'm thinking of getting the more expensive (regular) Firestudio with more I/O - need to check out the CPU spike thing though.

Great specs - discrete high headroom class-A pres - good S/N great conectivity and monitoring,, plus teh control room monitor thingy looks great
