| 3 channels. 1 drum kit. 0 kick mics. I will be recording a remote gig in a week or two and I have only three channels remaining to track the drums. It's a great kit in an even better room so I think this can be done successfully. I originally planned to record a pair of overheads (AKG 414s) and a large dynamic on the kick. The problem is that I won't have access to any dynamic kick mics for this gig. I'm instead down to a couple of decidedly low end condenser mics and a 57. I can use a Rode NT2-A, AT3035 or the 57 on the kick. I'm now thinking a pair of 414s in Recorderman setup as overheads and the NT2A in front of the kick will give me the best result. I have never used a condenser outside of the kick before. What would be your recommended placement or alternatives to this strategy??? ![]() |

| If you can scrape up $50 the CAD KBM412 is a really good kick mic. I have a D112 also, never gets used anymore.

It's not a matter of the money. I have a D112 in my personal setup but all of that gear is back home right now which I have no access to. I'm using all of the gear provided for me which somehow doesn't include a kick mic. Also, the drums will be recorded live in the same hall as a grand piano, upright bass, and sax section. | |

| A cheapo Oktava LDC with weak treble is what I usually put up in front of a jazz kick. Before that I used the 3035 which is more linear. At the levels you're normally mixing a jazz BD, it simply won't matter what you stick in front of it when you've got good OHs. Recorderman *is* about picking up the whole kit, isn't it, so you just need a spot mic for that little bit of attack.

| "maybe 414 pair out front in Figure-8 Blumlein Config LCD positioned to capture the Snare and Kick" That sounds like a good plan. |

| I have used a 3035 on kick with great results. Position it just on the inside of the front head, at about a 45 degree angle aiming up at the shell. I got a pair of 3035's for a ridiculous deal a while ago, and I am continually amazed at how great they sound. Try one on a bass cab sometime. |
