Below for sure. I lived in apartment during my college days with two women that had kids. That kid would run around bouncing balls and was just jumping around all the time. It was so loud an annoying it used to drive me crazy! If you're choosing an apartment I highly recommend living on the top floor!

In my place (Manhattan) I've only ever had a noise complaint from below...

...and we ALL complain about the garbage trucks outside in the middle of the nightstike

Wow. You all make me grateful to be living in a mobile home (that I inherited from my recently passed mother) - I never want anyone on the other side of a wall or floor again!

The worst was a woman who walked around a lot at night upstairs - in combat boots or high heels, never sneakers! Well, maybe it was the rock band next door that started practicing at 10 PM...

Shudder to think of those old days! Just give me four walls and a floor, unconnected to anything but the earth and the sky...

I guess I mean more specifically when it comes to making music....or even just listening to music. Would the people above you or below you complain the most?

There are many answers to this question

If a musician makes music with nobody around, is it music?
(and would anyone complain about it?)

IME people below tend to hear more stuff...but if it's REALLY loud, or the windows are open or you set up your amp in their bedroom next to their heads while they sleep, they might complain.

Both.

Don't be a dick.

Get to know your neighbors. The situation is always dynamic.

I'd personally like to kill the dude that lived below me five years ago. Remember C&C Music Factory? This guy never forgot them and I measured it at 116dB from my floor. (how f'cking loud was that in his place!!!)

If you don't own your own property and plot of land, act like it. Respect others, cause you share part of a building with them as your HOME...

Monitors at below 60dB and Cans are your only respectful options; dependng on the building of course.

If you want better than that, know the people that you are disrupting, and cooperate with them.

'Tis why I built my house on 20 acres in the forest.

Still have to keep the doors and windows shut because my valley acts like
an amphitheater to the neighbors down the hill.

Geez it's only 100 watts! tutt

I should record the bitch that lives upstairs sometimes, both of them, and their dog.

Vote: The bottom sucks. Give me the roof.

It's always worse for the person below, because your amp/speakers/drums are touching the floor, which transmits the sound directly into their space.

The last apartment I lived in the upstairs neighbors would stay up until 2-3 am (on weeknights!) making the most ridiculous amount of racket. It sounded like they were running around in circles while watching a very action packed football game. I couldn't figure out what the hell they were doing for the longest time, until I finally realized they were playing dance dance revolution!

my below neighbors rule in the fact, i have to shut down real loud stuff by 9 pm. the landlord even tells new dwellers that i record and have a band or two. 12 foot ceilings and shit, it's good. if they ever bitch ill charge rehearsal space fee's to my bandmates and give the neighbors all the money, please dont tell them though.
i would hate to be under my non master volume amp at any time of the day, but ah well.
