| If you are thinking of getting either a JP8 or CS80, be prepared for maintenance. The JP8 could be fine, but most do need some service by this point. We have two of them at the studio and only one really works... They get hot, go into edit mode and random stuff happens to the sound. The CS80, although also an incredible sounding synth need constant tuning. This is a major operation. The unit need to warm up, and stay warm while tuning each of the dozens of little tweeker pots under the hood. My partner has mastered this technique, but he only tunes the machine in the 8' mode. (Looking at the front panel of a CS80 you'll know what I mean) With that said, don't let me discourage you from continuing your collection. So many guys get the plugin version of what they think will sound like a certain synth but are disappointed. |

| I'm a fan of modern synths vs vintage gear, not as replacements for sound, but practical functionality. I like modern MIDI a bit too much, plus I know I can't stomach the maintenance on those beasts. If something breaks down, I like to know the manufacturer is still around to fix it. Call me lazy! One could take a look a the prophet 08 as a modern polyanalog. Certainly has my eye. Or the Alesis andromeda A6, but the purported tuning issues have me pausing. I've been mulling the two over. http://www.wohmart.com/a6/audio/ all the same, there is nothing quite like the cs80 or jp, and the p08/andy are not replacements in the slightest. also, I have no idea which synths were used by the folks listed. good luck! |

I've owned 2 JP-8s and both of those were rock solid as well... never a hint of a problem. Both of these synths are amazingly over-engineered. I'm sure there are lemons out there but if you can try before you buy and it seems okay, you probably don't have too much to worry about. That's assuming you are familiar with the nature of the beast... all analog synths need occasional maintenance and/or tuning, but these are two of the least problematic ones I've owned. As for the Michael Jackson song, I have no idea, but Steve Porcaro was a well known CS-80 user so that's my guess. Also, the JP-8 is not velocity and aftertouch sensitive like the CS-80 and it's been a while since I've heard that song, but there should be some clue within the song as to whether AT or Velocity is being routed to control something. | |
