Brauner Phantom, Rode Classic II

Few questions:

1. Is there both a Phantom C and a Phantom "V"?

2. As a long term investment, do i smell a concern regarding quality with the Rode Classic II?

3. Or is the Phantom C just the low end bargain mic from Brauner?

I need a mic for lead vocals. I've been working with the NTK and Blue Baby Bottle... which are both.... 'ok'. They get a job done, amateur level.

Eventually, I'd like mic locker to be able to pick what kind of sound, but as for right now... I want to not waste it on a regrettable purchase.

With the Rode Classic II, is it actually good, or is it silly to go for any tooob mic under $2k...

disclaimer: yes, mics are very personal, listen to them first, etc. etc. thank you. now after all that, i long for your opinion.

thanks.

We demoed the Rode Classic 2 and to me it was a lame mic. My Soundelux U195 killed it for all vocals, hands down.

I don't know. I've heard a Valvet Voice and it was a good mic but I don't know about the Phantom. I know my U195 has serious "Mojo"

There are several tube mics at or under $2,000 that are worthy of condiseration:

Lawson MP47 II
CAD VX2
Microtech Gefell UM 92.1S
ADK TT
AT 4060
Neumann M147

If you are looking at the phantom C and U195, I reccomend that you also audition the Lawson 47fet, and the Gefell umt70.

Phantom C vs V

Hi,

The Phantom C is the US version, designed to have more of a US type of voicing. The Phantom V is sold in Europe and is multi-pattern (and more expensive).

Yes, the Phantom C is the "bargain" version I suppose, only because it is not a tube mic. I would hardly call it "low end". It is built like a tank. It is voiced similar to the Valvet Voice mentioned earlier. Long term investment? The build quality is impeccable--It is built to last. Plus its transparent sound will make it useful for many different projects over the long haul.

As for the comparison to a U195 (also of impeccable build quality), the reaction we get from people about the Phantom C is that it is very loud and very clean with a lot of depth; sounds amazing on stringed instruments especially; and is also great for distance micing. The reaction on the U195 is that it sounds good on just about everything, and is very warm and intimate. The U195 also has the "fat", pad, and low cut switches for a lot of versatility. The Phantom C has less coloration, a little less proximity effect, and no switches.

I hope that helps.

Please!!! What kinda vocals, what music, what was the difference, whatever, please be more spesific if you wanna state opinions. I've heard none of these mikes, but statetements like those are mostly annoying as they don't really say anything at all.

The Rode sounded one dimensional and empty on ALL vocals we cut (male female - Rock R&B). The U195 sounded better, more dimension and warmer.

Depending on what your after and who's front of the mic it's hard to say one or the other. I own a Classic 1(different from the Classic 2 IMO) and U195's. I find the U195 richer and the Classic smoother just for general adjectives. The current project has used both for vocal duties dependent on what the song called for. The other qualifier here is the pre's which you haven't mentioned. I tend to love both with the Phoenix DRS-2, but the U195 and a Pendulum MDP-1a is all class if they can sing. So what am I saying? Beats me. Maybe a demo of each is in order.
