good EQ in the $1000 (new or used) range

For hip hop vocals (mostly). I was thinking of getting a channel strip, now I might go for individual components. I use a Shure SM7b mic. I was thinking of going with an Avalon M5 and a Distressor. What EQ would work well with this setup???

I'd stretch a little further and consider either the Daking pre/EQ or Vintech X73i. Both their EQ's are excellent, and it's like getting a preamp thrown in for $500 depending on how you look at it.

Used you can find an Amek 9098 mic pre Eq for around 1100. Its an amazingly flexible eq and decent mic pre

oops, no i meant i was in the same boat looking for an eq in the $1000ish price range... sorry. i still think its a worthy investigation. i had a pair of speck asc's on loan and picked the toft instead... i liked both extremely well, but i wanted a bit more 'character' than clean at the time. i still may add the specks later though...
good luck,
joshua

Maybe an API 560. It's my favorite EQ and I think the price is right.

I'd go with the Speck Model ASC with the transformer output option. It's on the clean side of things but it is musical. The transformer ouput works on the XLR out. It sort of makes the sound a bit more organic but it stays clean. If you hit the transformer hard, then you'll get a tad of soft distortion. And, if you use the TRS 1/4 inch out, then you get an active balanced output sans the transformer. In essence, you can get some different shades yet they are all shades of clean.

I know that most people say they want color but if everything in the chain is "color" then it sort of takes the color away.

I would look on ebay for an AudioArts 4200A. These eqs are inexpensive, sound good, and also have colored knobs like a gml. I have 4 channels and use them all the time. If I could afford it I would get the API but for my budget these fit the needs. I have used them on hip hop vox and they give the clarity and boost that I needed coming from a summit tpa 200 pre into a manley comp.
