should a space echo sound like this????

I've had a Roland re-201, that just got back from being serviced by 2 different techs. One of them couldn't repair the pinch roller, so I had to take it to another tech. apparently, its in top operating condition.

It sounds great..until it hits the splice. it gets warbally at the splice. I've only heard one other space echo other than mine, and it had a blip at the splice as well. The tape loop is new, and the splice is well cut and taped, by a guy who sells loops locally.

so my question is, should a space echo have a blip with a little bit of garblled sound at the splice, or does mine need more work done.

I can post a clip if needed.
thanks.

no! the splice should be unnoticeable. i still use the original roland tapes (bought a lot of back ups in the 80's!!!) and they certainly make no glitchy noises..as to whether your pinchroller is at fault or the loop:
i guess you have to try a few more loops..preferably from other people..in order to work out what is amiss. hopefully it's the tape...your tech says that the machine is okay...so let's hope!

I have to ask...is the splice done correctly? Is the splicing tape on the correct side of the recording tape?

This is what I was thinking. Are you sure you didn't turn the tape inside out before you put it on? Also, is the splice at an angle, or is it perpendicular? I don't know what speed these machines run at, but I imagine it's pretty low, so the quality of the splice is important.

I had a few 301s and a 555 a long time ago back when you could buy tapes.
This was between 1975 and probebly 1986/87.

I do recall that oaccasionaly there would be something noticeable at the splice.
I can't recall, but I remember hearing it while using one in the studio.

I will add this though...

If you don't use the correct type of "lubricated" tape you can QUICKLY ruin the heads.
As an emergency fix we once loaded a 301 with Ampex 456 and it ruined the heads within a few short months!

Be aware of this!

Yes, the splice is on the proper side of the tape, I can see the splice tape as its running over the head.

I will try a different type of tape loop.
