Ever write a ballad/love song?

Tried once. It sucked. Happiness breeds soul..less..ness (is that a word?)..at least for me.

Fast love songs don't count. I'm talking. OOOh "Amanda" type stuff. Or more recently, "Hey there delila" type stuff. By the way, the Delila song is a stalker song...he never dated her.

Ah well. Back to drywall work on the house.

-------------------------------------------------------
After reading..I notice...that I asked:
Ever right a love song? what the hell?
(Yikes. I need to self medicate less whilst drywalling)

I'm sorry. It must be said again. I've wronged many a ballad. I've written a bunch too. Some of those I've written I think I've inadvertently wronged as well.

Nope.
Never will.

I'm with Frank Zappa. "Broken hearts are for assholes".

I agree. But..sadness I get. I could write a sad song about a bad relationship. Done it. Done it just fine. But, writing a song about someone that you currently are "in love" with...that's tough.
I can't even imagine writing about how the sunrise only makes me see your eyes in the skies while the days and clouds they float on by and why,? cause you're love's the one I hope will never die....n' shit.

Satriani's instrumental "Love Song" is monumental .

I've written two love songs. Before getting married to my wife (about six years ago) I got inspired, we actually use it as our song at the wedding. And recently I got inspired again but this time by the support of our family during the illness of my Dad. This last song is still in the recording/production process but I think is going to turn out well.

Thumbs down

Used to. Gave that up 10years ago - slow ballads / love songs that is.

When you're pitching songs to artists the last thing they ask for is a ballad.

All up-tempo for me

You can do it if you've been in love long enough. Long relationships, marriage, and other associated suffering seem like fertile territory for heavy songs.

I've done a bunch. For one thing, I'm tired of the 'feel my pain, life is a vapid hellhole' school of songwriting... Probably has to do with my not being a disenchanted 20-something anymore. And for another thing, being inspired by the John Lennon school of honest songwriting makes me realize that true love - no matter how uncool it is - is one of the only things I actually know something about (been happily married a looong time).

I also like the challenge of writing a positive, uplifting song. Much harder to do, but when done well it's a fabulous thing. Some of my favorite artists who've done it well: John Lennon, XTC, Shaun Colvin, Joni Mitchell, Prince, and of course all the classic old school tin-pan alley guys from Rogers and Hammerstein to Jimmy Van Heusen ('like someone in love', 'darn that dream',) Irving Berline, etc etc.

Much as I adore Zappa, you gotta wonder why a guy who clearly loved his wife and family never had the guts to write a single love song... Was he worried it wasn't rebellious enough? I dunno. Maybe I'll have to play Sheik Yerbouti a couple hundred more times until I understand fully.

Well I'm retching right now... so you probably have a winner on your hands.

I have no problem with emotion in music- but I try to keep lyrics intentionally obtuse.
It is one of those "by defining, you limit" type of affairs.
I could do it with irony, maybe.

Come on guys! This thread needs to turn into a gear related discussion before we get into trouble
What mic captures "love" the best for a ballad?
Which mic pre sounds the "saddest"?

OK......

I'm on my 4th marriage.

I've got a ton of love songs....really.

I find that they only work if you come at it from a unique perspective.

For instance:

Sorry, back on topic...
