| Just to add my two pence worth! First penny: After living in Britain for over 20 years I've noticed the british (be they scots, welsh or english) produce some outstanding individual talent. Which is why in industries where individual talent is vital, like console and race car design, they do very well indeed. But they are (the english in particular) almost completely useless at teamwork and organization. Which is why they are so bad at large scale projects and mass production. The main problem seems to be a lack of willingness to pass on information voluntarily at almost every level of management and an over-estimation of the own importance on an individual level. Second penny: I like Audio Developments consoles but they might proof to be a bit pricey or lacking in features (depends on how you look at it). |

I try not too do a lot of hear say but do not claim to have never been guilty of it. My claims with respect to having heard different low level pro and mid level pro consoles are true. I spent 2 years debating on my decision too upgrade from the Ghost to my Neotek Elan. I strongly considered the Toft in that decision process and would give it a strong contender status. I even had Primal gear let me check out their consoles etc. etc. Actually, the Neotek was not my favorite choice in my search but the most practical for me. I am in no way cutting down the Toft. I consider the Toft and the Ghost both to be good consoles in the approximately same category. Nothing more or less. And this is only my opinion based on what I have heard myself not from others. | |

| Gear interested | Allen & Heath have always been a bit 'down market'. You can get a lot better. Check out the TLA tube based desks - they have come down in price a lot recently, and sonically piss all over A&H Good hunting! PS Southend on sea? Hmmm....Try the north! - AMS/Neve - Amek - Calrec...!

| The only British desk I've ever been lucky enough to get my hands on was an old AHB CPC24. I swapped it for a MicroKorg and it sounded absolutely fantastic and even had the novel feature of an interface to connect itself to a Commodore 64 to automate the sliders! Alas, it wasn't meant to be. One day a loud crackling noise started coming through the monitors and it burst into flames! Once the flames had gone out, I rang my mate I'd swapped my MicroKorg with and he said "oh that happened to me once before!" Apparently it came with a bag of spares from the previous owner and my mate had already stripped it down after a similar incident (he didn't inform me of this at the time of the swap mind you). In my infinate wisdom, and lack of electronics skills, I swapped it back for the MicroKorg. Shame really, but it did take six months for the room to stop smelling of burnt PCB. Despite nearly burning my house down, I'd love to get my hands on a decent British desk again as whilst it wasn't doing it's level best to kill me, it sounded beautiful! |
