Bass combo

I would like to buy some bass combo in to my home studio and I was wondering what could be a good choice. I considered to buy some Ampeg (BA models like 300 with two 10' speakers or with one 15' speaker) or Gallien Krueger (probably Artist serie 700RB/210). Any suggestions? I'm looking for flexible sound but most of time it should be some sort of "hard" sound. Not muddy. Clear and fat.

I sure like the sound of those SWR working man combos. I see them a lot at small venues around here. They seem to work/sound great everytime.

I really like my Euphonic Audio iAmp 800C. Might be a little over your budget, though. For recording purposes, I tend to use a combination of direct (usually a Groove Tubes Ditto into a 7th Circle N72) and a little rig comprised of an Alembic F2B into a McIntosh MC30 into a JBL K120 or an Acme Low B2 II. That is really nice and clear and fat!

Do you mean that Working Pro serie by SWR? Is it possible to listen some sound clips?

Looks like they have changed the color scheme on the new stuff, but the SWR Baby Baby Blue Bass Combo is similar to what I'm refering to.

The original SWR baby blue amp is one of my all time favorites for the studio.
The Trace Elliot BLX-80 is another good one, but it has that TE sound, which can get tiring after a while.
A vintage Ampeg B-15 would be an obvious choice. Not very versatile but there's no substitute for that tone.
The Markbass amps are really impressive. They're very versatile and quite powerful for their size. Also, they're the only one of these four in production.

+1 to ANY SWR combo

Especially the Black Beauty (1x15 and hf horn) and the Super Redhead (2x10 and hf horn)... both are outstanding as studio amps.

However another really nice smaller combo to check out is the Ampeg B-100R Rocket Bass... awesome little bugger! Almost has a (dare I say) B-15ish vibe going for it. Has a great growl when you crank it, but will give you a nice, clean, warm sound when you back it off a bit. 100 watts, 1x15, very cool retro styling, and best of all... not too heavy to pack around.

Bonne Chance in your search

Check out Mark Bass and Ashdown makes some nice sounding combos too. The Ashdown stuff can get decent clean, modern tones, to nice big, round tones. The Mark Bass stuff is very transparent and clean (to capture the true sound of the bass, as they claim), but they also have a "VLE" (Vintage Loud Speaker Emulation) and "VLP" tone-shaping knobs on them to tweak the sound a bit as well.

A lot of hype around Mark Bass recently, which seems well deserved. I'm on the hunt for one of their combos currently... however, they just started distributing in the US over the past year, and only in limited quantities at Guitar Centers, so they can be a bit hard to find. Think they've been in Canada for a few years. I have an Ashdown MAG300 210 combo (which I also pair with a 1x15 cab when playing my low-B 5-string) and it does quite well... can fit the bill with a variety of tones... IMHO the best combo for the $$$ out there.

The SWR stuff is good too... I played through one of their older 2x10 combos and liked it quite a lot, but I haven't been too impressed with their newer stuff. I've also seen the Genz-Benz stuff get pretty good raves amongst bassists.
