| H-Hats, Snare Bottom, Toms! I know most go for the high end pre's for the critical overheads, kick/ front, snare top, Room, etc. but when more mics are desired on a kit, what are most folks using on less critical sources? (H-Hats, Snare Bottom, Toms)... |

| Sytek Burr Brown will be great on snare bottom and HH and the stock will be great on toms. I couldn't think of a more cost effective and perfect preamp for this. |

| Whatever's left? When I have spare channels, I love using API's on toms.

| Usually something like this: Kick inside - Trident A-range Kick outside - Trident A-range Snare top - Trident A-range Snare side - Drawmer 1969 Toms - Trident A-range's OH - Great River MP-2NV perhaps Langevin DVC HH - Drawmer 1969 AMB - D.W.Fearn VT-1 I guess that would be; on less critical sources mostly DVC or 1969.

| On the cheap, the syteks or the rnp is going to be your best bet. As far as I know, most of the small mixers on the market, besides very expensive gear, sound particularly bad.... on the cheap/utility side of things, I do have a warm spot in my heart for the sound of some of the old tascam mixers, but I hesitate to recommend one. On a side note, if you do mic the hat, you can use it as a key to duck the hat in the overheads. I see people not miking the hat as a way to counteract how unskilled drummers really wail away on the hat... but even though it is counterintuitive, having a devoted hi-hat mike will allow you the opportunity to have less hat in the final mix. Just a thought. |

| I have a Neotek Elan an I love the sound of the preamps for drums in general. Sytek sometimes has racked up Elan strips on eBay.

| One with big hooves | Usually console preamps. If there are leftover outboard micamps once the whole kit and band are together I'll use them on toms. I almost always run HH & snare bottom through the console for EQ and to flip polarity when needed.
