+1 for the pultec. I often have 3 EQ's on a kick drum. Usually, I have a waves RENEQ plug on it to scoop some of the ugly out of the middle and I cut the bottom a little bit. Then I put a 550 on it to boost anything that needs boosted in the mids or upper mid clicky stuff. Then the Pultec goes on last and boosts up the bottom. I like the low end of the pultec, but it's often too much low frequency content there, so I cut a bunch out and then add the pultec bottom back in.

You could certainly look into the AMTEC PEQ-1A, which would save you a ton of money compared to buying "classic", and would yield a similar sonic smile in the end. I've been using one to finalize my kick drums nearly every time I'm sitting at the desk. The Boost-a-Bit/Atten-a-Bit trick in the low frequency section works just as much magic as the Pultec units of yesteryear. If you've ever set your fingers across the dials of a vintage unit that you felt needed a complete fumigation, this puppy'd be right up your alley. You'll end up digging it on more sources than just the kick drum, too. Always a bonus.

Here you go.

Does your kick not have any mojo on it's own.

Aside from the obvious options of a Pultec or Lang, the massive passive is quite cool on kick, as are the api's (although they do a totally different thing).

i was comparing it to my 560 for kick last night, EM-PEQ just blew it away...they did work well together though.

I have the Lil Freq, and the 560... the Germ Tone Control (very thick sounding) works very well with these IMO
the CLM Expounder is excellent also.

i've been loving both the germanium tone control EQ and the Great River EQ-2NV on kik.

The Mercury EQ-H is also good alternative to the Pultec IMO.

You Mercenary guys are too funny!

Every post that mentions a Pultec, you try to pimp an Amtec. (SPAM)
Every post that mentions a buss comp, you try to pimp the Obsidian (SPAM)
Every post that mentions a Neve module you try to pimp Vintage Designs (SPAM)

Either all of you guys over there are honestly sharing the same bad ears and poor taste (which is possible, but not likely), or you are repeatedly SPAMing.

The DW Fearn VT-4 may not be a Pultec, but it's plummy on kick. I love it.

The 560 (which you have) is also really great.

Another vote for the EM-PEQ or an original Pultec. I would have put the API 550A on the list to, but you already own that.

Well, I think my ears have done just fine for me,
thanks though.

Take a look at the other posters who have also recommended the Amtec.

Perhaps you might gather some useful information from other people (not including myself) who have tried these units in application, rather than shoot down my comments about an equalizer (and even the unnecessary compressor reference) that,

to my ears, have more than enormous character (mojo),

like it or not, it's just my opinion.

I dig this box, it adds certain magic with dynamic equalizing bottom end.

Yes, the Expounder is amazing on kick. The fact I'm mentioning it once again has NOTHING to do with the fact I have one for sale in the Classifieds.

(Is THAT spam??)

Mojo?
funny word,very silly.

Yeah,an old Leedy/WFL or Radio king drum w/Calf skin heads strategically mic'd with an old ribbon into an old tube mic pre & maybe a lil' tube limiter..
you won't need an eq with "mojo".thumbsup

finally heard the Amtec..not bad..although if given a choice, i'll stick with the real ones thank you.
reminds me of the mercury:close, but..
I'm so sick of these goddamn marketing anglesfuuck

kool for kick:

Pultec[Not the damn plug]
Motown
Sphere
Chandler Germanium tone control
API
fearn
Lang
Tonelux

API 560 and others

Folks, the A Designs EM-PEQ seems to be getting great reviews. I've been thinking about picking up a couple of new 550a units and 560s, plus a couple of Tonelux EQ4s, but the EM-PEQ from A Designs and Avedis E27 have me thinking there are more options. Seems to me that the 560 does things nobody else is trying to do, a small, graphic EQ for the modular format. All this talk of tube gear is always interesting too, tube pre, mic, etc. A la Doors engineer, he digs tubes too.

API 560

What's the word on the API 560? Seems like it fills a niche, 10 band modular graphic EQ with smokin' sound quality? Any thoughts GS folk?

Speck EQ

I love my Speck ASC-T eq for kick especially..... Perfect frequency selections, Addjustable Q's, optional transformer saturation and not exactly pricey!
