Of the 2, was there 1 that you found to be more suitable for kick and bass?

Did the Amtec's lack of an input transformer make a difference?

Would you consider Mercury's transfomer switch to be advantageous over the Amtek, since it gives you choice wether or not to engage the middle transformer?

Anybody else has answers, please chime in!

Something along the line of a Pultec is the way to go. Absolutely has "the sound!"

Roll it up to 100hz, push it up to about 6, engage the cut around 3 to tighten stuff up, roll up on 4K and crank the high end... maybe use the LP shelf to clean up the top end... perfecto.

Of course I'll say that because I learned on a Sphere and I still own Sphere mic pres and 920 EQs.

I kinda' like the answer about getting a good kick sound first.
That is most of the battle as long as you aren't trying to achieve greatness with a crappy recording chain or recording medium... see DAN's post.

I tell this story over and over lately, but I recently mixed material I recorded through a Soundtracs CM4400 onto a MCI JH24 running 30 ips +9 over 185 on 456.
Actually, I used a Studio Technolgies Mic PREmminance feeding the CM4400' EQ.
I also mixed the same band, same drummer and same drum kit except the sessions were recorded at A&M studios in L.A.
The studio was the "We Are the World" room. A big Neve? SSL?
I mixed this in one big mix "session" over about a week.
Now, obviously the equipment used to record the kick was "better" at A&M compared to my studio's Studio technologies mic pre and Soundtracs EQ chain.
People who have heard the recordings have preferred the sound of the kick from my room EVERY TIME they hear it.
These are VERY knowledgeable people and they are all picky.
